This is a car that I just bought for me and the family. My dad and I are going to try and bring this little croissant back to life…
My love for these cars goes way back to when I was a baby. My mom had one while I was growing up, but unfortunately after a wiring harness issue in the mid 90’s, she let it go. Ever since, we always spoke fondly of the Renault, and I always told them if I could find a good one someday, I’d grab it…and here it is…
My dad’s birthday is today, and my mom’s was last week. I printed some photos of the car, and will be putting them in a card to give to them tonight…we’ll see how they like it!
I’ll update this thread as progress occurs on this car. Hope to start working on it once the weather breaks in the spring. It will likely not be a major project (yeah, right), in the sense that we will basically just do our best to clean it up, and make it roadworthy again (new fluids, lines, belts, interior removal/clean, exterior detail, etc.). The good news is the car is mostly rust free, and all there. Which is REALLY hard to find these days in a GTA…but then again, that’s the reason I bought it…
Anyways, here are a couple teasers in it’s current, neglected, sitting since 2004 state…
Pretty sure they are quite rare…I don’t know the exact # made, but they only made them in '87 (last year of the car in this country), and I’ve personally only seen a handful of them in my lifetime…
Definitely has that 80’s turbo Dodge look to it. They also had Ronal wheels similar to Audi’s, and I can see a bunch of interior parts shared with the early Jeep Cherokee. What a weird car. I love it.
I think its cool you are going to try this, but I have a feeling the parts are going to be near impossible to find. There is a really sought after R5 Turbo2 in our family that needs a bunch of help, but after looking at the reality of the rebuild and it’s cost, we keep abandoning the idea.
I remember these when they came out. Renault claimed them to be the first car, off the showroom floor, to be able to hit 1g on a skidpad. A lot of 84 Z51 Vette owners complained.
