1990 240sx Coupe Auto to Manual Transmission Swap

Hey guys, so I am doing an automatic to manual tranny swap on my 90 coupe, everything was going smoothly until I tryed to unbolt the bolts holding the transmission to the engine around the top of the transmission. I just can not seam to get anything on there to take it off because of the limited room, and when i do there is not enough leverage. Just wondering if you guys had any tips or tricks on how to remove the transmission because I am starting to stress out and get nervous that I may not have this car ready for the summer. Let me know thanks alot guys!

unbolt exhaust after the cat, put a jack under the crank pulley with a block of wood and jack the front of the motor up to lower the rear of the motor, should be able to get at them that way.

Okay I will deffinitly give that a try and let you know how it goes, thanks alot

I ended getting most of the hard to reach bolts undone, I am still having trouble trying to get the starter off though, I believe that is my last bolt if not there may be one more above it

Don’t need to remove the starter to remove the transmission, just need the bolts out. I just did another 5 speed swap this saturday. Long extension and lift the front of the engine and you have all the room you need.

in fact you do need to remove the starter to unbolt the tyranny. I did this before its a 10 min job with the right tools. you need a shallow socket then a universal joint down to a 1.5 ft long extension. i just used two impact extensions. pop an impact gun on to that buzz the bolts off and your set. Its a quick job get it from underneath. Careful you don’t brake the sensor wires. i did reaching my arm up there to get the socket on.

good luck

unbolting and removing are two different things, compadre.

Yes right you are correct. sorry misread what you wrote.

but if hes doing a swap he may has well remove it or else it could just fall out or hang by its wire. if the wire isnt disconnected from the battery it could spark. as well it will free up some extra space if he needs it.

I understand what you’re saying, but you need to remove the wiring harness from the starter regardless to change the lower wiring harness

So the transmission is now completley out of the car, I am just having trouble figuring out how im going to rewire the standard transmission, I may try and find a service manual somewhere, and as well not totally sure what to do with the coolant lines, do you have any idea if they go back on, or do I need different ones?
