Any of you guys owned or driven one of these for an extended period?
I test drove one just now, the power delivery was smooth…but man was this thing ever TWITCHY. Snap oversteer like nothing else…I was wondering if this was normal…I wasn’t even provoking it at all…
I’ve owned a Turbo II and a MKIII Supra along with an 86 and a couple of 90 240’s before, but man… I felt like the biggest RWD noob ever…
What do you guys know of this car when driven to it’s limits? Snap oversteer all day long?
I can imagine why, but really…it’s turning me off the whole MR2 thing… I’m trying to figure out if I AM the problem or if THE CAR is the problem. I may have to go drive a different MR2 to get an opinion on the car as a collective, rather than use the car I drove as reference…
I’m personally in love with that MR2 (91-93 turbo) and would kill for one. I love how it looks, I love how it feels, and I’ve been a Toyota fan way before I was into Nissan. They are very twitchy, but I just happen to like that. I still stare at them whenever I see them.
The biggest problem mine had was brake fade. First corner id have perfect brakes and honest to god next corner it would feel like an S13 on stock brakes that had fully faded - in one corern, then after that there was no more brakes. It must have had some sort of economy organic peice of shit pad or SOMETHING.
When you come in hot in an MR2 you get sideways. Its very simple. When you come onto the throttle too much you are sideways. But only if you aren’t understeering first.
They aren’t that bad once you get used to them. Mine was really messed up unfortunatly. Picture this. The rear toe control arm had an elongated hole. Think oval instead of circle. Upon heavy load to the outside passenger tire, the TC arm would phyically MOVE 5-7mm OUTWARDS. Obviously that instantaneously gave me 2-3 degrees of toe out in the rear. Like honestly the first time I drove the car hard and felt that I almost shit my pants i was like WTF was that?!?!?! Then i learnt when to predict it was coming and would steer straight. When you were on the limit turning left it would just bounce back and fourth, if you watched the car from behind you thought it was a gino.
Not to mention anyone watching my car from behind was like WTF is going on this things driving sideways.
Then my engine kept randomly messing up. I’d be driving along and then BERMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm dies
Shit.
This happened to me like 5 times so randomly, turns out the connection to the fuel pump was bad. Nice. If you let it sit overnight the contact would somehow get fine again and it would drive mint for a month or so, then fuck up again.
Then the engine started missing and doing all this other gino stuff, sometimes running on 3cylinders.
Right around then I parked it and bought pavels S13 and was happy once again
Keep in mind that true sports cars have MR platforms. But for everyday driving, it might not be so ideal. Sandbags would come in handy for bad road conditions. If you plan on leaving it stock, with no huge power upgrades it shouldn’t be a problem. So think twice if it’s the car or the driver.
sounds alot like my fiero(especailly about sasha’s comments, as my car did the same thing lol)
but ya in the winter (or rain) it was alot easier to get sideways, and usually happened when i didnt want it to, lol
but i had no problem ever in the winter getting stuck, unless it was at a place where everything on the road was having problems(ie uphill stopsign with ice)
but still lots of fun, and if it wasnt for the motor crapping out, then i wouldnt have a 240 right now, lol
