1995 Eagle Talon ESi Auto Trans Trouble

ok so i have been having a lot of trouble with my dsm lately and im getting pissed. the trans locks itself in 2nd gear for some reason. just to do 45mph i have the engine at 5k rpm. i wondered if anyone knew anything about the tranny since its automatic and the car is nonturbo.
i was thinking it would be the shift solenoid that was broken but when you first start the car up itll shift just fine, then all of a sudden itll slam into second and stay there. thanks in advance.

well my old avenger did that and it was a sensor?cant remember the name right now. I beleive it was called the speed sensor. On my avenger tho once it went into 2nd it stayed locked until i replaced t hat sensor and that fixed it. Hopefully this will help.

when it goes to second gear and wont move into any other its called limp mode…my dad is a a604 expert that used to work for chrysler

yeah i replaced the sensor and it ran good for about 10 minutes and then it locked itself again… i dunno i am goin to buy a shift solenoid and see if thats the prob

keep us updated. I got a buddy with a 97 GSX thats having some auto trans trouble too.

The A604 can and will break eventualy. When it does, you have two concerns to troubleshoot: The mechanical system of the A604 and the electrical system of the A604.

First, before you do anything else when having A604 problems: Change the fluid with new Mopar 7176 and filter. You’d be surprised how many A604’s find their way to the junk yard merely because the wrong fluid was inside or the fluid was dirty. It does make a difference.

You can get limp mode or other problems with the wrong or dirty fluid in the A604.

While changing the fluid, remove the tranny oil pan and look to see what kind (if any) of debris is at the bottom. If its just the usual sludge and dirt, then chances are the A604 is still mechanically salvageable without a rebuild. If it is full of chunks of metal - chances are that something has broken and a rebuild (if not a partial one) maybe required.

With the fluid changed, check the tranny and engine mounts to make sure that they are all intact- as they CAN cause limp mode, noises, and vibrations that maybe associated with A604 problems.

im gonna try both of these options instead of getting the shift solenoid.

is that the tranny u have? I looked at some of the applications of that tranny and didnt see an eagle talon listed.

Eagle talon has the same transmission as an Eclipse if you need help my dad is a certified Chrysler mechanic who was a 604 specialist so feel free to ask

i took the tranny pan off and replaced the filter. but it didnt do any good

I asked my dad about it last night said it probably needs rebuilt …but he said changing the fluid also does a world of good …he said make sure you know its not normal ATF its Chrysler ATF +

i put atf+4 in.
