1998 cobra build thread

i got the car from deathproof almost a year ago. i drove it a lil, did some maintance work and almost immediately broke the tranny; busted the 3/4 shift fork. i picked up a used t45 from PA and waited til the spring to throw everything into it. i got the tranny in and subframe connectors, did the fuel lines, did some baseline tuning/datalogging and then went ahead with the paxton install. on for some pics starting with the tranny swap, SFCs, fuel system, then blower:

parts used/already installed:
novi 2k paxton blower w/ 3.5" pulley
cx racing FMIC and 3" pipe 24x12x3" core
60# injectors
BA3000 maf used in a custom 3" maf flange, pm me if you need custom CNC work!
-8/-6 fuel feed return lines
fore twin GT pump hat
03/04 cobra radiator and tstat
IMRCs deleted
3.73s
deleted EGR/SAI
upr x-pipe and SLP LM1
full length subframe connectors
im using SCT proracer to make the calibration, LC1 wideband and innovate oil pressure and boost gauges too
stock drivetrain for now
stock block for now

only plan on running 8-10psi, so it should be about 400-450whp. i dont really care too much yet, i just want to trap about 115 and have it be reliable on pump gas until i can afford to rebuild the motor. i wont be able to launch hard until i upgrade the axles and awful tranny, so ill leave the stock tires on it until its all ready for some serious abuse. when everything is said and done i wanna shoot for 600+ whp and trap 130. all this work took place over the last few months.

did it all on the freakin back patio:

while the tranny was out i deleted the EGR and secondary air injection just to clean up the engine a lil:

the t45 i bought wasnt from a 96-98 cobra which had excluse tailshaft tranny mounts, so i had to swap tailshaft, see the difference?

full length subframe connectors, SLP LM1, and UPR x-pipe. its stupid loud:

fuel system goodies: -8/-6 feed/return lines, push-lok fittings, and twin GT pumps. i tried to modify the stock basket to hold both pumps but it was a waste of time and ended up just buying a fore fuel hat and 03/04 cobra tank. that tank is on national backorder, i should get it sometime this month.

this upper radiator hose was a pain in the ass, i used a procharger coolant cross over setup, but the hose wasnt righthttp://lh6.ggpht.com/_OLqxR4qxYk0/S-8-dRahG8I/AAAAAAAABPc/_LuA2oYJLnw/s640/100_1318.JPG:
ended up using a universal flex hose thumbs down

the overflow bottle needed to be relocated, i only have a finished bay pic of that but here is the before:

scariest thing ive ever done was use a punch and air hammer to tap the pan for the return line:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_OLqxR4qxYk0/S_xLgeZlPpI/AAAAAAAABSY/-FVD-80E_sI/s640/100_1340.JPG

injector swap:
this was the flow chart of the 60# injectors i used after the were cleaned from new era, i put the highest flowing injectors in cylinders 7 and 8 as they typically run the hottest on these mod motors. B headed 4Vs arent as “bad” as C headed and up cars

stock rails are good to 600ish whp:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_OLqxR4qxYk0/TAAsgYXKfRI/AAAAAAAABUg/xgbs3-jshh8/s640/100_1351.JPG
i tucked the IMRC cables behind the manifold while swapping injectors, i have em ziptied open and disabled in the tune:

it turns out the blower is about an 1/8th of an inch to close to the block so im starting to chew the belt up on the alternator pulley and its giving me some charging issues. once i get those all figured out, i can start to really dial the tune in and head to the track for some baselines. should be a fun summer! not pictures is how the radiator needed to be moved forward ~.5" to make room for the 4" intake, the passanger side foglight bracket needed to be heavily modified, and the wiring required to datalog the wideband and etc. IATs are awesome with this IC, and most of the piping fit awesome with little work to be done. so far im pretty excited.

ill update the thread with more pics and vids asap.

nice looks good

nice one-post build thread. LOL.

are you going to have the belt issue sorted out for wednesday?!?

im hoping to have it sorted out tonight.

haha. well that like a time lapse of 3 months work of work. im thinking the 18th ill head to the track.

Looks good, going to be nice to have another cobra to play with

Day of the Cobra builds

ive been considering making this thread, and cobraman was my inspiration to seal the deal. ha.

Looking forward dot seeing this car out.

Looks like a fun car!

Maybe I’ll jump on the bandwagon and do a build thread once the car is running lol

:frowning: steve is having knee surgery the 14th which is why there is a push to go the 9th

edit: i guess he is having it this monday so that doesnt matter anymore. He still wants to go though. I may end up driving

your welcome lol

I loved this car! Good work

Nice build. Really clean car too.

Yeah boy!

nice, is that a return style fuel rail? I thought the cobra’s had return-less? What fuel pump are you running?

there is a buncha miss-information about the fuel rail setups on these cars. all 96-98 were returned. 96-97 have the standard single speed style pumps, 98 is a goofball, its got the same returned system but a two-speed, 99-up style pump/basket setup. im almost positive 96-98 cobra rails are all interchangeable.

that being said, im running stock 98 cobra rails, with an aeromotive regulator, and the aeromotive stock style connectors to -8/-6 an fittings.

im running twin GT pumps in a fore hat, the ford racing performance parts catalog shows this pump setup to flow about 420l/hr at 43psi. plenty of fuel for almost anyone.

I shimmed the blower away from the motor 1/8" and finished up the calibration tonight, ~10psi @ ~6700rpm. except when i got home i found the belt skipped a rib on the SC pulley, back to where i moved the SC from. i think i gotta bad idler bearing or something.

got my gauges installed and wired, just need some fittings to hook up the oil pressure gauge.

im really excited, i just hope i dont fuck up the teksid block ha. also, i have the proper harness to use an aftermarket headunit and use the stock mach 460 amps, anyone have any experience with this ford-audio stuff? i replaced the cd player with the gauge din.

awesome

small update:

so i removed the entire bracket assembly shimmed the blower forward an 1/8" to line it up with the alternator pulley:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_OLqxR4qxYk0/TBA_UzV3QgI/AAAAAAAABb4/qCOGyUo4pUY/s640/100_1424.JPG

but i kept getting this:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_OLqxR4qxYk0/TBA_TvRq5dI/AAAAAAAABb8/UhjanZnZHic/s640/100_1422.JPG

the freakin belt would jump back towards the motor one rib, the exact spot the belt was with nominal blower location. then i realized the alternator still has an underdrive alternator pulley from summit on it. so i had to re-removed the entire blower assembly and brackets to sneak the alternator out from under the coolant crossover pipe, and swap spacers for the alternator and then shave the backside of the pulley so it would clear the alternator housing to move that back, 1/8". i can get this blower off in like 30min now. ha.

its been two days and i dont have any belt dust, so i think i got it about right now. i need to schedule some dyno time somewhere and dial the tune in for real.
