1998 Legacy Outback: can someone tell me what part this is?

It’s a sensor thing next to the gas tank pass side connected to a fuel line that runs towards the back of the car into a black box also pass side into which 2 or 3 other (fuel?) lines also run.

What does this do and do I need it? Can someone tell me what the box is too?

Green circle is the bracket it was mounted on

Green arrow is bracket. Purple arrow is where it would be mounted

This is the box, behind the rear pass wheel. Bottom of the pic is towards front of carhttp://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f133/thachoang/20140827_1045161_zpsd9bea092.jpg

Was thinking box is a charcoal canister and sensor is a bypass solenoid kinda thing?

EVAP check valve?

@Norb_O

I never dug into that stuff on mine. It’s probably evap stuff. Scrape the dirt off and pull a part number off it.

People on buffalo scooby are saying check valve or purge valve or pressure sensor… idk. It broke off and idk how to reinstall. I think fuel will leak from that spot?

A guy told me it won’t throw a code bc the sensor is just a two wire (he said even number wires: no codes, odd: codes. Is this true?). I’ll ziptie it onto the bracket and see how it goes

How can a sensor that goes missing not cause a check engine light?
