2 week notice letter?

Ummmm, I’ve never actually wrote one of these for a professional job… what do you say to your boss of 5 years to let him know that you are giving him the shaft??

lube or no lube

just explain to them how you feel that its in the best for the company and yourself that you need to explain your career and move on to a better opportunity or etc. do it with no burnt bridges so you can have a door way back if you need to

Thats good advice. The only thing I would change would be to not say anything about what is best for the company. I would just say that the time has come for you to move on and that you’ve enjoyed your time there, but a better opportunity arose and you feel it would be unfair to yourself not to take it and expand your horizons.

Good link Whitey!

Here’s what I’ve got so far…

This is to inform you that July 21st will be my last day of employment at Anter Corporation.

I am willing to train a new employee up until July 21st, in order to help them get into the “swing of things”. Should you need me to train someone after this date, please discuss it with me.

Please accept my apology that my notice is not a full two weeks.

What do you think?

um, if its not a full two weeks… I would talk to your boss first. You want to leave on good terms and sometimes a letter like you have started to compose comes off the wrong way. Talk to him, tell him that you are leaving. And then he will ask for a resignation letter or throw more money at you.

Well, the owner is out of town until Monday so I can’t talk to him about it. I start the new job on the 24th. (If I had waited any longer, I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job because they wanted someone like NOW). If he offers me more money (he will NOT offer me what I’m getting from the new company, it’s that much more) I still wouldn’t take it. I told the new company this during my interview this morning.

My general manager (next lowest guy on the totem pole) and I do NOT get along… in fact the last altercation we had, he said “One more time and you will NOT have a job here! I guarantee it!” so I was just going to slip a letter in his bin before I leave today… yes, I’m a pussy.

its up to you, but don’t expect a good reference from a company that you do not give a full two weeks to. I would also question the new employer in not understanding that you need to give two weeks to your current employer

It’s a bit late now to try and start a week later.

I think the new employer is VERY understanding. They need this high-volume (busy as hell) position filled NOW, but they are waiting a week and a half for me. Makes me feel good about it… then again I’ve only ever worked for one other company before (restaurants don’t count).

would use that sample, that leaves you with no commitments to train.

I like that one. Thanks!

That sucks and makes you sound like a big pussy, don’t take any shit. “Advise” them that you are leaving…you call the shots and see how they react, it is your career, don’t apologize! lol

yeah ‘i’ll train any new employee’… shit i’ll train them to eat my shit. if your work wasn’t good enough to garner you an open door on the way back in, two weeks of being their bitch won’t either. i’d just tell the owner i have to quit tomorrow for a new job, good luck. i’d then tell the assistant manager to eat a dick and fuck off

And I would never hire you…

I agree with Whitey about the new company. Everyone knows you give 2 weeks at your old place before you start, that would be pissed if you gave them a 1.5 week notice.

It’s a little too late to go back and tell them you can’t start until your full 2 weeks is up, but don’t let a company bully you into doing something that is wrong, in the future. good luck

haha… I am secretly (kinda) hoping that tomorrow the GM will tell me “adios”, then I can start my new job Monday, rather than deal with this BS for the last 7 working days here.

agreed… mellon bank was trying to be all baller and push me around back in the day for some shitty IT job… my second interview was a thursday and they tried to PUSH me to quit my job that day and start the next monday. … naturally i said no… and then i was told i would “never work in the city of pittsburgh again” fuckin assholes.

  1. my current job really really pushed to get me in ASAP… but i wanted to be nice with my old job so i took my time and made my decision (didn’t take long) and put in 2 weeks, came back and told my current job i’d start in 2 weeks, but that didn’t officially start until the next day so 2 weeks and a day… they said that was fine… so the ‘urgency’ died off once i accepted the offer and it was in my court.

if you don’t care about a reference or anything from the last job and it sucked… fuck’em. if not, it’s never a good idea to piss anyone off that can say something negative during a backround / reference check.

i have my last 2 resignation letters if you want them for a sample.

I gave 1.5 weeks for my last job. I was cool with everyone there and they were cool with it. I spoke the my boss first and was told to write up a letter. Is there anyone else you can talk to?

Just curious where were you wroking and will be working…doing what? If you dont want to answer sorry for asking.

another thought on this, you probably do not have many job references since you have been there for 5 years. So I probably would try to leave on good terms or that will haunt you for a while

I am 99% sure that no company can give you a bad reference… legal issues.
