2000-2002 Audi S4s

Does anyone have any experience with 00-02 S4 2.7T’s? I’ve been thinking of getting rid of the SRT lately, and have had my eye on them. They seem like they’re really hard to find around here, I’d like to just take one for a ride. The ones I have seen have the Tiptronic tranny, which I have no interest in.

On a side note…anyone in the market for an SRT for a reasonable price?

it’s much cheaper and easier to make power with the 1.8T quattro audi’s…the 2.7T’s are a bitch to work on, and parts are expensive…just a thought

This isn’t going to be a race car, just a nice daily driver. I’d do an exhaust and chip and that’s it. From what I’ve read you can make pretty decent power with just that.

I don’t know much about the 1.8T, but I have no interest in building a car, and I’d think you’d need to do a good bit just to make it run with the S4.

S4’s with 75k miles still go for almost $20k

buy one w/ a warranty if u can. chip tuning is no big deal, nor is the cat back exhaust. however, if you wanna change downpipes or turbos, your looking at some loot just for labor.

maintence wise, check the timing belt. make sure it has been serviced. belts themselves are cheap, but the labor to change it is not. You basically have to walk the front end off the car to work on the belts. Granted, you could move front end and hang it off one of the rebar bolts, but u still have dick for room to work.

oh yeah, just finished one of these up this week. broke timing belt meant 1100 in new valvetrain parts-- valves are backorderd from all aftermarket suppliers, and that was cost for oem audi valves. You also cant cut oem valve stems when redoing the head. so it is either replace a valve, or dont touch it at all type of head.

luckily, i have the tools to lock out the cams on the 2.7l and 2.8l 30v v6 motors. so im sure my rate would be cheaper than a shops

i  saloir!

I’m with Sailor-- I’ve worked on numerous bi-turbo S4’s from maintainance to serious mods. They’re extremely expensive to maintain-- parts and labor both cost a bundle. The stock turbos have a tendency to go bad, especially on the earlier models. Changing a turbo involves dropping the entire engine out of the car. That = $$$$$$$$. If you do decide to purchase one, make sure it has been religiously maintained. The purchase price is only the tip of the iceburg.

Having said all that, they are really nice cars to drive.

shouldn’t you get that timing belt looked at before 60 regardless of A4 or S4. i thought the tensioner going was common?

one place that i know has had a few is called foreign traffic on rt8 in hampton. link here. it doesnt appear they have any in stock now for that year range but they have had a few not too long ago. another place to check is auto tech performance limited also on rt8 in glenshaw. can’t find the website for it right now but the number is 412-487-8324. i’m not sure if they have any in stock but if you tell them exactly what you want, they’ll find it for you. hope this helps.

Sailor & Teg, thanks for the info guys!

Belt, tensioner & rollers should be done every 60K to be safe. Tensioners blow when people change the t-belt but not the tensioner-- or just don’t don’t know what they’re doing and fuck the job up.

Every A4 belt job I do includes t- belt, t-belt tensioner, rollers, thermostat/ o-ring, water pump, serp belt, (&v-belt on 1.8T’s), and serp belt tensioner if pulley bearings are questionable. Some people squeak, but I refuse to do the job if people won’t replace all the neccessary parts.

Ya… what he said.

Some info here… As it's possible that I'm soon moving on to another car, I wanted to give something back to AW : - AudiWorld Forums

i was looking @ them a couple yrs ago…i think ther eis one year that people try to stay waya from?? 2000? i can’t remember.

but i thought i remember reading something about 1 year having more problems then others.

:eek4: My neighbor has a 2001 S4 and had to get his turbos replaced. It was under warranty but i believe he said it would’ve been around $4500 if he had to pay out of his pocket. Very nice car and i would love to have one but the repairs seem to be very very costly. :eek4:

again, that was most labor costs… the s4 shares a lot of parts with vw and they aren’t that outrageously expensive… the labor to swap both turbos is a PITA and what is where the high $ amount comes from.

Yea i understand the labor part of the deal, but in the bigger picture disregarding labor parts seem to be more expensive than your average car. Other than the turbos that went bad on my neighbors car he hasnt had any other problems and drives it everyday. Then again i guess the S4 is not an average car and is not for everyone. It just seems to me IMO everyone that i’ve met that has worked on or owned Audi’s have gone thru problems with bad dealer service or expensive repairs. But like i previosly said i would get one if the oppurtunity was there.

Its like…I would buy a blown S4 and let it sit in my garage…just to say I had an S4. They are just so incredibly fast with minor mods. Most compare them to M3’s but thats like comparing apples and oranges.

2001.5 and 2002 models tend to be a bit more reliable. They can be spotted by the “newer” S4 badge seen in my sig below. I’m sure the stock turbos would be fine for a long time as long as the car is not chipped. However, most people add a chip and those are the folks you need to replace the turbos when the turbo lady calls. I was lucky to get 50k+ miles with a chip. Play with fire… That’s what you get for running 15-18psi vs. 9psi stock.
