The embargo on the photos of the new VW Scirocco hatch due for Geneva hasbroken, so we’re happy to bring you some of the first shots available of the new car. Although it’s not quite the compact blend of sexy and sleek the show car promised, it does represent a new direction in VW design. Read on for high-res photos of the car from the front and back and a quick analysis of the changes from the Iroc concept.
Notable differences from the concept include the lack of the metal grille surround, which gave the original such great visual impact. Also different is most of the rest of the front fascia, with different air intakes, an altered hood line and different, though similar, headlights. The thicker A-pillar and chunky hood-door transition area break up the flow found on the concept, and whereas the sculpted hips and rear canopy of the Iroc concept gave the hatch a muscular stance, the squared belt line and blocky C-pillar area give the production car a low, somewhat cramped look. From behind, the Scirocco looks a bit more attractive, and fairly closely matches the concept’s lines, but the trapezoidal, dual exhaust outlets on either side of the rear underbody have been traded for twin round pipes at the left corner - decidedly less attractive, though probably a good deal cheaper to manufacturer and route.
We’ll have more details and pictures as the story progresses.
looks a lot better than the 2008 scirocco that avatar posted, but without the old scirocco/corrado fastback type hatch styling its just another gti in my eyes
I’m not sure chassis numbers are out yet. All I’ve seen are engine options including the TSI twincharged straight-4 (168 hp), and the 200 hp 2.0T FSI engine.
Honestly while I do like the looks, as I do love hatchbacks. It would almost seem like this car is having an identity crisis between their other offerings.
the ones that were made for racing look nasty as hell. one of the pics is in the other thread. and i think vw is really doing a great job with their cars lately. other car companies could learn to catch up. people will talk trash about them but i challenge them to actually get in one and drive it and see for themselves how fast and fun they can be.
