2009 Taxes Thread

Not sure if this is directed towards me, but I bought a new vehicle this year, and you can claim taxes. Granted I dont really clear the 5k+ for itemized deductions, but I threw it in there anyway.

We also purchased a new vehicle this year. Cant wait to see how that plays in

So you can claim a new vechile purchase on your taxes? Has to be something new this year.

It is part of that government stimulator package. I think you get something like $1750 back correct?

Mine should be much better than usual since it will have my $8000 in Obama money in it and I didn’t get a bonus this year which bumped me to a new bracket last year since I took it deferred in stock options. (At February lows  )

Interesting.

No, its always been like that… You cant claim the entire vehicle, just the amount you paid on taxes for it.

Normally it only makes a difference if you itemize your deductions, and clear over 5k in expenses. Not entirely sure as to how it will play out this year.

I havent heard anything about an extra stimulus for buying an auto this year.

Then this one, which it appears ended in 05. I didn’t see anywhere of it being extended.

but interesting none the less

Hmmm thats weird… Not saying anyones wrong, but I did this back in 06, and last year with my other jeep. It didnt matter much cause I didnt itemize. Whats odd is, HR block told me about it

I played around with a couple of those calculators and it had big bold $4000+ as my return…

until I opened my eyes and saw that it didn’t say that was my return but what I was being taxed on. In tiny teeny letters elsewhere it said I’ll get around $1,800 back.

Keep looking around the page. I’m sure that you’re reading it wrong as I did…

Oh no… It says in big bold letters at the top that its my refund.

I just typed a bunch of info into turbo tax, and it looks like $1800 at this point. I have not entered any other deductions, only income. This is quite odd as I usually am dead nuts on for getting like $5 back from them. I guess getting a raise and married messed up all of my calculations from last year.

edit: got w2 on monday. did turbo tax for free from taxfreedom.com since I am poor. took 15 mins. expected refund 2/5. woot

I think i screwed up by not changing my address to ohio when i moved “temporarily” from ny. now i have income from 2 states and preliminary turbo-tax says i’m -800 in ny, +100 in ohio, and +100 fed.

normally i’m +1000 fed - wtf? any experts with general advise?

Oh yea, I’m sure we can tell with all of that detail

:picard:

You can use them to prepare the taxes, but not file.

Typically does. From what I hear, first year marriage is a bonus, then it becomes a boner.

I roughed in mine… getting back about $1k between both Fed & State. Not too bad; better than the $3k I used to get.

update: actual federal refund is 3336. that calculator is pretty accurate.

:loopie:

getting almost 9k back. 1st home purchase + improvements + school tuititon.
