just got done doin mine on turbo tax. Got 2400 back. Usually i get around 1000 so im pretty happy. Most of it was kuz i pay for my own school and this new thing in 09 where they give you even more just for going to school or some bs. O i made that work pay thing too
Might want to check to see if your parents can max out the tuition credit and tell them you’ll split the difference or something. For those of you qualufy for the school credit and are borderline as far as claiming yourself or having your parents claim you, you should calculate it both ways to max out the tuition credit. Tuition credit doesn’t carry over so make sure you try to max it out. Post up if you need more clarification as I don’t really have the time to type more right now.
Also, Joe, regarding your post of “Rent?”. There actually is a NYS renters credit that some people here may qualify for but it has pretty low income limits. Just do a google search to look into it if you’re curious.
hey for you smart tax guys, i work about an hour away from nyc but live in buffalo am i able to claim my mileage i drive 330 mi. each way about 3 times a month? i put almost 40k on my car this year.
Not if its to and from work. If you are required to attend meetings out there occasionally or other non regular trips, then you can write it off per mile.
Your commute to and from your office no matter how far it is does not count as a write off.
I will almost GUARANTEE that if you try to write off 40,000 miles on your return after never having written off mileage, that you will be inquired of or audited. Business mileage, charitable mileage, whatever.
Which brings up the second point. I would assume that you do not keep contemporaneous mileage logs when you do drive those miles. The IRS frowns upon re-created records for mileage and has dismissed them as backup in court.
So in short, (but not being rude haha), its back to my answer of …nope.
I live at home and single, cant be claimed, no dependants. turbotax is asking me for my parents taxable income. tentative tax or maybe i did somthing wrong
The following errors were found in your Federal return:
As per new IRS regulations, all returns with form 5405 (First Time Homebuyers Credit) included will not be accepted by electronic filing. You can return to the Credits Menu and delete this form to continue the E-file process. After your return has been accepted by the IRS you can create an amended return (1040-X) with the form 5405 attached. Upon completion of your amended return you will need to print and mail the 1040-X and Form 5405 to the IRS for filing of the First Time Homebuyers Credit. Additional preparation and filing fees will apply.
Our gov is such a joke. They come up with the best ways ever to make things inefficient, annoying, and best of all not give you what they promised.
Anyhow I guess I will amend for the third time now! I e-filed and once it is accepted I have to 1040-x it hahahahaha what a fucking joke they think this is how people should do things.
