I was actually surprised , i guess it had rained pretty hard. but conditions were pretty decent. it was probably a lot better on tuesday. there were a few mud spots and green patches but nothing too bad. mardi gra was open, and the whole yodeler side. maybe a few more that i didnt see, i guess they had 6 trails/hills or whatever open. cafeteria was not open, but the hotel bar was
small rail park open off of mardi gra. they had a ton of other hills that were completely covered but they weren’t open because im assuming there was no snow in between them.
it was only 24$ so i can’t really complain. however i probably won’t go back until we get a decent covering of snow.
They’ve only got 90"…Most of the country is hurting just as bad as we are, except maybe the 4 corners region/southwest CO. F this winter
I went to HV tuesday night, the snow was surprisingly good for being 100% man-made. Hopefully it gets below freezing again before the weekend so they can groom out the rest of the trails that they made snow on.
Wait until the weather turns around. We’re hurting for snow and terrain is very limited right now. I have had trouble finding it worth my while to walk from my office to the lifts recently, let alone drive hours. The cold this weekend is huge for snowmaking, but expansion on manmade alone is a slow-go.
As for where to head when the going gets better? Lots of great mountains. Really depends on what style of riding you are looking for. For park, the top two are going to be Mount Snow, and Killington. For more advanced terrain, the only mountain south of Killington that is even worth a second thought is Magic Mountain. Killington and points north are where the better all-around skiing is.
Jay Peak up on the Canadian border measures out 350" on average. While they definitely get more snowfall than anywhere else, and they have a lot of awesome terrain and great woods, they have been accused by many to inflate those snowfall totals a bit. Definitely still worth a thought though. They’ve got a swanky new base area too with a nice lodge, and a brand-new indoor waterpark with one of those surf things.
Killington has a bit of everything. Good mix of cruisers, some steeper stuff, a number of great tree areas, and a bunch of good parks. Good bar-scene on the road if that’s your thing too. Bigtime snowmaking firepower which ensures good snow depth. Good annual snowfall average of 250".
Conditions Sunday > Saturday. But unfortunately IMO these conditions we have right now are not for people just starting off and not knowing how to ride. Its very narrow on these runs and to congested to which you really dont have the room to learn. Along with the Man made snow, its harder to learn on. Better saving your money till conditions get better.
He did great. He is 12 years old and has been snowboarding on the back hill for a year or two. He was actually hitting a 3 foot tall 10 foot gap last winter and sorta knew how to turn and stop. After 3 runs down the bunny hill I took him up mardi gras. He did really well after a while. He started getting frustrated when he would fall after catching an edge but by the end he could make it down candy cane without falling. I think the conditions were great for him; not too many people and not that icy. I believe we went down basically every run that was open, not the steep hills next to tannenbaum and the main cindy’s drop though
I ate shit a few times. I bought a pair of skis for messing around on and I fell going down the run that’s next to the lodge on the corner. Skiing is just plain hard, not that much fun for me yet but I’ll try again some other time. And then I was riding my toe edge looking up the hill watching my brother and I hit a chunk of ice or something and got flung right to my ass. My butt hole hurt that’s how hard I fell. lol
I’m gonna go buy new snowboarding boots tonight. My boots are super comfy after 10 years, but I just realized the lining (one piece boots) has settled behind my ankle/calf causing a huge pressure point. I got my monies worth I suppose
It is snowing in Texas and Arizona. lol WTF? None of the ski areas are getting snow except Taos in New Mexico. After the attack of La Nina last year, this year has started slow.
By all means, have him show up for a lesson on a Sunday sometime, 530/630/730 and I’ll be more than happy to give him some help. Conditions werent bad, but they werent great that day.
Yeah, getting kind of pissed off hearing about Texas and other states getting snow right now. I deal with trucking companies and have them telling me all about it.
Thanks, he goes with ski club on wednesdays starting tomorrow I think, so that will probably be the only time he gets up there. I’ll keep you in mind if something changes though. How much for a .5 hr session?
