This season blows.
I should just convert my sled to asphalt and go drag racing instead and forget the whole snow thing. Oh wait, I just bought a new track and ordered 192 studs/backers. Fuuuuu
Don’t convert. Run the blacktop as is. In for the spark show. Snow’s comin but I’m not puttin my Trojan on just yet.
Headed to the Adirondaks this weekend. With my quad. There is jack shit up there for snow too.
^^when I was at hebelers last week joe was saying guys were going ~10 hours north in canada to get to rideable trails. Its not looking good anywhere…except for alaska. They’re overwelmed with snow lol
I’m driving up to the border of NY and Quebec this weekend, but not bringing the sled. Going to visit family. From what I’ve heard they don’t have good snow either. Sounds like we might drive through a mess of lake effect on Saturday heading up 81 though.
Off to the Adirondaks right now. 34degrees and rain in Oswegatchie NY, lol. We might get more snow in wny than up there!
Another teaser storm in our area so it seems.
I don’t think you will be saying that after the southern tier gets socked tonight. I would imagine the trails down there will be mobbed tonight. The milestone parking lot will be filled.
^ They’re going to need a more than just some blowing snow to open the trails. The base underneath is still soft mud, and with all this wind there will be lots of bare spots. By Sunday I think some trails will be open because of the highs in the teens and lows in the single digits Saturday.
I was thinking that with the ice that has accumulated from the rain last night that it might make a good base. I think the winds might die down later and the lake effect will hit dropping a good amount over the ice base. What do I know though, I don’t get paid to predict this weather.
I hoping by the time I get back in town Monday some trails will be open and in decent shape.
Will be to muddy to ride even if we get enough snow. Ground will take a while to freeze.
I can’t imagine all the idiots who just can’t wait to ride will destroy the trails too. Are they even legally open yet?
I’m not looking to ride in the same area a lot of the Buffalo guys in this thread are.
Ground needs to be frozen with at least 5 inches of snow to open trails. We only have like 2 inches of snow so far with a ton of wind drifting and like Jay said we got a shitload of rain yesterday/last night so it’s probably pretty slushy underneath.
The good news is that cold snap Saturday and Saturday night will really help. You don’t need a 2 foot deep frost line, just freeze the ground down a few inches and put some snow over it.
Snow acts as an insulator. Snow on top of mud doesn’t help it freeze, it just melts the snow and creates even more mud. We really need no snow (which will happen Tuesday with the rain that’s in the forecast) then cold to freeze ground, then fresh snow on top.
Right now I’m sitting on the 81 north, about 25miles from the fort drum exit. Traffic has been at a standstill for the last hour, snowing very heavily, tug hill will prolly offer some decent riding, but still lots of water out there.
The trails are still CLOSED until we get enough snow to ride. All the rain yesterday makes for a lot of mud under a thin layer of snow.

And yes, riding on them while they’re closed is trespassing and the people that work so hard to get good trail access will turn you into the police in a heartbeat. The landowners who allow the trail usage are very adamant about the trails only being open when the ground is good and frozen so their land doesn’t get ripped up.
