2011-2012 Snowmobile Season

Rode yesterday, Colden trail riders opened their trails yesterday. Put on about 40 or so miles. Conditions were pretty decent. Better than last weekends crap. Season total of miles this far: 143. Last year had about 1,000 on by now. This winter blows.

Today’s rain and warmth certainly didn’t help things. At this rate even if I do register my sled this year, I’ll be able to get just about the whole season next year for free too

This winter blows.

X 200:tdown:

Nope. Sled registrations aren’t like cars, they all expire Aug 31st no matter what day you actually registered it.

ewwww

my buddy doesnt register his sleds. last year he got stopped and the cop asked him why he didnt register it, he said “i cant afford to spend 100 bucks with the winters we get here. look at the trail were on right now theres rocks popping up through the snow”

the cop completely understood and laughed about it, but gave him a ticket anyways. when he went to court the ticket was only 50 bucks. ended up being cheaper for him to ride that year lol.

i registered and insure my sled every year, but its not really worth it. i have a few miles on the track stand, thats about it. trails in the northtowns havent opened once this year. when the hill opens up i think im loading up on the trailer with some friends.

It’s a recreational hobby. If $200 for a year for registration and insurance is that big a deal for your budget you should probably just sell the sled.

I’ll admit it does suck this year, but this is hardly the norm. It’s the least snow on record EVER in the history of WNY winters. Even worse, it’s not just WNY. No where in NY has the amount of snow they should have right now. Even Tug Hill has struggled to keep their trails open and they’re usually measuring their snow base in feet this time of year.

Wait till that updates to reflect all the rain from yesterday.

Same date, but last year:

im not registering or insuring mine this year
not worth it even if feb is nasty, i dont think we are going to get to ride at all

its not a matter of being able to afford it or not, its a matter of priotitizing money. with the shit conditions we have have and the constant fluctuating weather we have its not worth it for him to waste 200 bucks to get ~100 miles in. its not just this year. last year was fairly decent. but year after year it has been a constant up and down with the weather.

as for your comment about being able to afford the hobby, not everyone wants a desk job. some people like to be outside, for him he works farming and plowing. if it werent for people taking those types of jobs you would be SOL for finding food at the store.

but what i meant by my previous post is that at this point those that have not registered are probably better off taking the chance of not bothering if the ticket is less. i typically see dec/cops once a season on the trails around here.

Don’t start this here lol.

His attitude of “I can’t afford it so I’m not going to pay” just pisses me off.

  1. If he’s not registered he’s also not insured, meaning if he hit someone else they’re stuck going after his broke ass in court.
  2. That registration fee we all pay is what supports the trails, so we’re all paying so he can ride on the trails for free.

If you want to blow off this season and not ride because the $100 to $200 doesn’t seem worth it fine, I get that. It’s the end of January and I’m still looking at grass outside my window. But don’t give me this, “it’s too much money, but I’m going to ride anyway” crap. If you can afford the sled, the gas & oil, the gear etc you can afford to pay your share to keep the trails open and be insured.

you dont need to be registered to insure a sled. if youre going to bitch about supporting trails, then get your ass out there and help the clubs on their trail marking and maintenence days, or consider helping do the maintenence on the groomers. no need to get all pissy with me, im all legal and i help out when needed. theres no need to judge other people.

I spent $90.00 to reg my two sleds. Insurance with full coverage is $53.00/month for both of them. When the trails close for the season the insurance comes off. Only ends up costing like $100.00 for insurance for the “year”. A year membership for Colden Trail Riders is $25.00. It’s really not that bad.

One thing is for sure, I have saved alot of cash this season on fuel!!!

Yup, easily spend $100+ a week on fuel plus food. When the trails are good I’ll go through a tank during the week and 2-3 on the weekends. Don’t forget oil, every 3-4 tanks need to fill up.

i think this weather and lack of riding is really getting to me. lol.

converting to aspalt sounds more and more appealing everyday

lol… +1

I’m just glad I have a quad. We should just have a nyspeed quad meet. Hit up majestic trails.

Seeing we had such a wet spring and summer everything got planted late and harvested late. There isn’t going to be a lot of smooth fields either. Everyone planted corn and soy beans for the most part. I have only seen 2 winter wheat feilds around. On top of that, the ruts in the feilds are going to be massive. I got the grizzley 700 stuck in one I had to ride it out lol.

Ducks for cover before the 4stroke guys chime in…

We spent $100 just in gas and tolls for the truck getting to Parish and back last weekend. WNY really needs to get some snow because going to central NY every couple of weekends is going to get expensive.

Oh wait, they don’t have any snow now either…
