No interest in the races here. I’ll either be out riding or skiing.
racing is always fun
you may want to consider racing in 2 classes instead of 1 to get some more time in actually racing then watching. ive always found it to be more fun running a couple classes
A little update. We changed our minds and dropped at the Patchin Fire Hall in Boston. Here’s the loop since I don’t have any of your fancy GPS setups. Boston through Sardinia and Yorkshire down to Franklinville. Stopped for lunch and downed a lead cheeseburger and fries. Headed back another way to avoid a MASSIVE mini mud lake just outside Sardinia. My buddy got stuck in the last mud hole and I would’ve taken pictures but we were laughing too hard. Water was up to the top of his seat. Went through Springville and stopped at Cookies in Zoar Valley, headed up through Ashford and over the 219, back to the power line trail in Boston. All told, just over 100 miles. I will be feeling this tomorrow.
Weather was beautiful until we got down to around Franklinville. Sunshine and no wind. No grooming done all the way to Franklinville. We got lucky and caught grooming on the way home. Many small water hazard’s, one challenging one, and the monster that ate my buddy. Snow volumes were good in Boston and Sardinia but thinned a little as we neared Franklinville. Springville seemed to have decent amounts. All in all, not a bad day. Some good trails and bad. Hope colder weather freezes up the water hazards. Enjoy all.
Just croosed over Genesee Rd outside Sardinia.
The mother of mud holes. Probably spanned 30 yds in length and somehow I came out of it almost completely clean.
Just got home from a 103 mile loop from Chestnut Ridge. Will post details tomorrow morning.
Anyone going out Saturday? Seems my bro is stuck with work so he cant go out.
Looks like the GPS freaked out last night so might not have a nice GPS map for this run. My buddy is working on cleaning up the data.
Anyway, left out of Chestnut Ridge and heading south through Boston and down the Boston power line trail to C4. East to Arcade on C4 (Hey Pioneer Sno Surfers, it’s called grooming, maybe you should try it) over to Arcade for dinner at the VFW (everyone welcome). From there John lost by a 2-1 vote to take the much longer alternate route home because Joe and I really didn’t want to go back through Mogul Town USA (again, thanks Pioneer for not grooming ONCE since you opened these trails). So it was south to Machias, almost to Franklinville, back west through Ashford and up to Springville. That loop was by far the best riding I’ve had this year. Freshly groomed (met 3 groomers), wide, fast and smooth. Even Ashford’s section through the woods was amazing. Top off gas in Springville then headed back up to the Boston power line trail home. Didn’t make it back to the trailer until midnight but it was well worth it.
its always nice being that first sled out right after the groomer goes by
Funny groomer story from last night. We caught up to Ashford’s groomer just as it was heading into the woods. Decided it would be a good time to take a break, have a drink and give the groomer some time to build a lead. I was in front when we caught up to it and had never really followed a groomer before to watch how it worked. I was so distracted checking out the drag that didn’t notice he turned off the trail and damn near lead our group into the groomer barn before I realized what was going on and turned around.
I’m about to head out in Boston around 1:30 or 2. Doubt anyone is available this afternoon though.
ill be out in springville around 7
Damn wish I would have seen this before now I would have met up with you!! Hope you have a good ride
That’s fucking hilarious. Good thing he didn’t decide to groom off a cliff. I think I saw the same groomer yesterday. Unfortunately we came head on to him in the woods and we had to scooch as far off the trail as we could and he BARELY made it by without crunching us.
I did about 55 miles today. Boston -> Sardinia -> S. Brook Park -> Colden Lakes -> Boston.
I hope this snow Friday is enough for the northern clubs to open. Getting tired of the Boston/Colden/Springville area.
How were the trail conditions? Felt like it was considerable warmer today. I thought I heard this next “storm” is supposed to hit the north towns harder.
They were average. Some water, in the Pioneer area mainly. I caught a fresh groom between the park and Colden Lakes which was nice.
went out riding yesterday… up in a very desolate location… we parked about 40 miles away from the nearest gas station…and ~70 miles away from anything that resembles a town.
we got to this one area about 15 miles from where we launched, climbed this large hill(mountain), and at the top talked about doing down the other side…visibility was pretty terrible, but we decided to descend, knowing there was only one way out of the canyon, as we wouldn’t be able to make it back the way we came.
we got to the bottom of the canyon and started trekking towards another draw… which would lead us up and out of this canyon.
3 hours later, we found ourselves not being able to make it up and out of the canyon… we decided to try our luck getting out the way we came in…
long story short… we spend 8 hours trying to get out of the canyon… a storm had rolled in, and completely covered our tracks where we came in… and the fog was making it very difficult to see.
all 3 of us had burned through all our food… and expended all our energy… because the only way to make it to the top, was ride as far up the side of the mountain as possible, get stuck, dig out, and try again until we had a packed down path.
oh, and the snow… atleast 8-10 feet deep. at about 5pm…or just as it was about to get dark we all managed to get out of the canyon and back down the other side… we all ran out of water and food, we were SOAKED from the snow storm and the constant digging sleds out of the snow… and were running on reserves… we were about 30 mins away from digging in, and sending out an SOS.
needless to say: if you’re going out in the back country…be prepared… we had survival gear (shovels, firestarter, knives etc) as well as a emergency GPS that would send out an SOS signal…but only enough food to last us about 4-6 hours of riding. (riding out here is very different than trail riding back in WNY, you can put on 20 miles of breaking trail, and be exhausted)
this is the first time I actually felt that I could be getting into survival mode
attached a pic of the fog… you can see that visibility was down to about 100 feet or so…which makes it VERY difficult to pick a line up the side of a mountain.

Enough food to last 4-6 hours of riding? What happens when the last snickers bar is gone? Do you guys dry up into skeletons and get blown away by the wind?
yes. funny for someone who’s probably never rode in the mountains… after about the 30th time digging your snowmobile out of 8 feet of snow… you’ll realize that the trail mix, cold cut sandwhich and protein bars were not nearly enough…
oops
Think I’ll stay on my groomed trails.
