2011-2012 Snowmobile Season

No one had an opinion on my studded ice ripper track huh? Never see many of them around here despite a lot of good reviews online.

I had seen them years ago. Always wondered if they worked or were a marketing gimmick.

i didnt have an opinion on the ice ripper because it would be useless for me and ive never used one. for the kind of traction i need, studs are a must. for someone that just wants a little more for the icy conditions its okay.

1qikz, the double backers are great for providing additional support for the studs, however they can be a pain if you misalign when drilling the track for your studs.

im a huge fan of the studboy powerplate backers, lightweight, thick aluminum, “curved” square design. ive always gone with singles but i believe they have them in doubles as well.

right now im running 204 1.325 woodys signature series stainless/carbide tip with their tall aluminum nuts and all singles studboy powerplate backers. i will be adding another 51 in the near future so that every outside lug is studded instead of every other.

If you run 96 you can run them all behind a lug, which eliminates the risk of tearing studs out significantly… Also i’m confused how less studs would make them tear out easier (thats the opposite of any opinion i’ve ever herd) Unless you’re saying the more there are the less you have to check em because if they fall out, who cares

Ps those plastic one piece Studboy “superlite” backers are really nice

Also do you only run grass drags or do you run snow too? A few people are trying to get me to run the snow drags at KB next week (i think), just seeing if you’ve herd of it.

I wanna jump some roads. lol[COLOR=“Silver”]

Good thing you already volunteered in helping me install all my double backers.

Just ordered a set of Bergstrom Triple Point carbides. Spent quite a bit of time talking to him (it’s a one man operation) about riding style, weight, trail conditions and of course track… recommended an 8" which surprised me because I was expecting a 6" recommendation.

I was always told there was a pick count to carbide length correlation / formula.

yes and no, ski pressure has alot to do with it. my zr had 192 studs with 10" slim jim dooly’s (40" total carbide up front lol) and my cfr right now has 204 studs and 6" stockers (12" total carbide up front). how your suspension is setup plays a big factor in it…i havent had a chance to get into some really icy woods yet but i have a feeling i will be going with more carbide.

less stud equals more pressure per stud, thats why they can tear out / bend / snap more easily. ive had plastic backers before on a track, they definitely have a weight savings which is nice however i dont think they hold up as well as the aluminum. unless youre talking about that power tower thing that the stud threads into?? those are a BITCH to put in lol…people do seem to like them as long as theyre not the ones doing the install.

i have ran snow drags as well, but mostly grass drags. i will be racing this sunday at arcade with my cfr in the king of the trail classes, and i plan to race at KB as well the following weekend. i really want to try out asphalt too. my cfr would be perfect for the pavement, lots of top end power. our f7 is strictly grass. its actually all torn apart right now, going through it and getting a head start on next season.

I need to stud mine. Tired of dealing with ice hills and always spinning. My bro’s 700 is studded. When ever we race he always get the whole shot, I have to ease in it and run him down. Packed snow I can pass and pull as long as I get a decent start and hes not to far in front of me. Last year it was easy to catch him, this year I set up his clutch’s so hes a lot faster.

^^clutching is king

Went out riding with 3 other guys last night down to Zoar Valley for dinner. then headed back up to Uncle Frank’s for a few more drinks before heading home around 12:30. trails were ok from Springville down to Zoar valley. they were better coming up to Uncle Frank’s though. had some good fast riding passing each other every other turn on the way there. got a little hairy a couple times lol. had a blast

Looks like the southern tier trails are getting nothing but rain right now. The way its looking right now, this storm will wipe out the current conditions and not leave us with any snow down there.

^ It’s supposed to change over to all snow soon enough.

I have more faith in the Sabres right now than our local weather “experts”…

Not me because Lindy has no say in the local weather predictions.

Its amazing what a good set up clutch can do.

“Whole” shot of what? Are we still talking sleds here?

:thefinger:

Watching the webcam at Buffalo Ski Club and it’s still raining there. :frowning:

5" of fresh heavy snow in grand island and still coming down pretty hard. guy at work was talking to his wife, in cambria/newfane area at home it was whiteout conditions. all of the north and niagara county is getting hit pretty good

edit-just got info that theres about 7" of heavy stuff in lewiston. looks like i will be doing some local riding…

pic my friend posted this morning on transit road in lockport. this is where the trail C4D crosses transit along the powerlines.
