So what is causing these cars to gain more weight? Is it the technology and crash testing that’s causing them to put more electronics, more wires, more airbags, thicker/stronger framing?
What light weight “sports” car does the US produce that is under $35k?
Now of those, which are RWD?
None. They get around the weight part by giving them 400+ HP V-8’s though.
I’m shocked at the weight of the new Mustang. I heard for 6 months that it was going to be substantially lighter and have a few more ponies. Now it’s official, that they will indeed weigh 50-100lbs more, and the Coyote 5.0 is only up a few hp. The 2016 Camaro is going to be all new on a new platform. It WILL weigh substantially less, and it will have a variation of the Corvette’s LT1 (455-460hp). Not gonna be pretty for the pony car wars. Dodge is selling the Challenger Hellcat with an insane 600+HP HEMI, but it’s still on the 300M platform, and you can expect it to weigh 4300lbs easy. I don’t know what Dodge is going to do in the near future. They don’t have enough market share with the Challenger to develop a new/lighter platform. Challenger R/T’s are sweet looking cars and sound amazing, but 375hp in a 4200lb car is the same ratio as the Mustang V-6 and Camaro V-6.
