26 x 5days x 52 weeks a year = 6760miles a year. Not really that much. So lets assume you hit somewhere around 13500 a year miles.

13500/13mpg = 1038 gallons of gas.

13500/22mpg = 613 gallons of gas.

@ 4.50/gal, you’re saving $1912 a year. So in 3.13 YEARS you BREAK EVEN.

But wait, there’s more. Tell him what’s behind door number 2.

You said “another” vehicle, meaning you’re keeping your truck. So now you’re paying insurance on two vehicles, registration on two vehicles, and upkeep on two vehicles. Oh, and lets not forget you’re looking at 5k-6k luxury cars so there’s a good chance that upkeep could be substantial. Plus, a lot of them are going to want premium fuel. Yeah you could run regular and the computer will adjust but you’ll get less power and less MPG, further cutting into your “savings”. And you mentioned financing, so you’ll be paying interest.

Bottom line, you’ll be lucky if you EVER even break even on this plan, let alone actually save money.

I’ve already told him this in not so many words. He needs to sell everything get one good MPG daily and establish himself in life before he buys toys.

I’m awaiting a call from NYS corrections, so I’ll eventually be driving alot further (down state), If people decide to retire and then the state also hires… Could be awhile! So I’m thinking of a vehicle for this purpose too, should of stated that earlier.

actually … this applies for me too. The vette gets a consistent 26MPG average and the Bike is even better.

The difference is going fast is a hobby. Hobbies = money. No one here has ever spent thousands on making their car faster with the justification that they’re doing it to save money.

I already completed all the tests other then the academy, which I hear is easy and my overweight friend just completed. Also if I get a new job I’m not sure if I would get approved for a loan since I haven’t worked at the current job for over a year. So it’s not like I have to apply or take any more testing other than the academy.

Edit: gas is only going to keep going up, so eventually the better gas mileage vehicle would be cheaper even with the loan.

I already put gas @ 4.50 in my figures. And honestly, oil is inflated right now because of the conflict in Libya. The demand doesn’t support > $100/barrel and neither does the supply. Right now it’s being driven by BS speculation and as soon as things settle down over there investors are going to jump out of oil and into the next “big thing”.
