420a Turbo Help

Hey guys not gonna lie but I am new to the whole turbocharging mods and I was wondering if you could safely turbo a 420a(with stock internals but was gone through) and a automatic transmission? Money is no issue but like I said I am new to turbo’s, I would appreciate any help.

you can safely turbo anything with right tuning, infact i have all the parts u would need besides a manifold! lol

So your saying if I got threw a bolt on turbo kit with stock internals and a automatic tranny I should be ok with the right tuning and where would be a good place to get tuning done?

If money’s no object you’d be better off getting the gst that’s already turboed.

truth

Yeah you can do it, but if I was you I’d pass on this, not worth it IMO. There is very little success turbo 420a stories, many have attempted it then end up buying a GST or GSX.

Carbonfiberhooded turbo’d a 420a, if he chimes in he’ll tell you it’s a waste.

I don’t want to buy another car since I already put major bucks into this one and want to continue the project so like I said would turboing the car with stock internals and a auto tranny be ok?

What about swapping to a gst motor, then you can keep your car and save some major headaches.

Same headache, amounts of fabrication required for motor mounts cause the trans is on the opposite side, etc.

Good point, thanks I didn’t know that.

Can’t believe someone like hasport hasn’t made mounts for it. They’ve made it so that you can put nearly any acura/honda motor in a civic.

Yes it will be okay, pending the current state your motor is in,supporting mods and if you skimp out on parts. Trans is weak from the get go and the 420a headgaskets suck. Just so you know car will not be much quicker then it already is. Just saying.

Buy that mint Laser turbo in the classifieds haha

Just buy one that’s already turbo

thats because 80% of the ppl who mod dsm’s are cheap choochs who complain about the price everytime something is released

I’d skip the turbo and just spray a small shot if your going to do anything. I had the equivalent of a Star Stage 3 which was a 50 trim BB turbo, exhaust manifold, FMIC, and upgraded fuel system. It was the slowest 50 trim powered car ever.

You can only run 7-9 psi safely on those stock internal 420a’s. 9 psi being really on the aggressive side of things.

Geoff on here had a RS that he sprayed. It more than kept up with my TSi when it was still stock. He really didn’t have much into it either. I believe an exhaust, header, intake, SAFC II, and a Walbro 190 and the spray kit.

This is the truth…gives all dsmer’s a bad name…

To the OP modding a turboed dsm is bad enough…but a 420a is not going to be the way to go…unless you are going turbo just to say you have it this is pointless…you may as well just get one of those things that makes a BOV sound and mount and intercoller on your front support it would be the same.
If you like the way your car looks so you wanna use it, keep it as a dd, then buy another car to build for power. These cars lose reliability fast as they get modded.

my friend had a 420a that was turbo’ed. i dont recall how much boost it was running. i drove it and it moved decently for what it was, probably made a bit over 200hp but it was just waiting to blow up. it wasnt very healthy. i have no idea what the auto trannys are like but its probably not worth the time and effort. he ended up selling the car and buying a built gsx…

Don’t do it.

So many reasons not to do it, so few reasons to do it. My first car was a 96 talon and I did lots of research on the matter, including doing a 2.4 swap, which was really intriguing. If I had gone through with any of it I would have lost way more money on the car than I already did. When you can have the same basic car with a 4g63 and AWD (for pretty cheap), why settle for anything less?
