LOL.
Give me 6000 dollars and some motivation and i could make a kit that was way sweeter.
Since this kit was free we can’t criticize it? What the fuck did he want us to say? Seriously. If he didn’t wan’t a response why post pictures. If he wanted us to say, ohhhh thats soooo sweet. He should have posted it on vwvortex. Shit, just post pictures of the APR stickers that you got with it. It’s fucking awesome that you got it for free. But that doesnt make it any less lame. or make vw ANY COOLER.
My beef with VW’s is that everyone thinks they are like this whole fucking different animal, that is unlike ANY OTHER CAR. It’s not. IT’S THE FUCKING SAME. THE SOFTWARE MIGHT BE DIFFERENT, but guess what. Cut off the shitty ECU and toss on an EMS. other than that, it is exactly the fucking same. DONE.
BLAH BLAH BLAH, you don’t know how expensive it is to mod an audi. That mentality is exactly why you pay so much for your shit. Because you think you have this unique mystery box.
A vw is no different than a honda when it comes down to THE MECHANICS of it. It’s just cooler to run stretched tires, big rims and do appearance mods and talk about how your next mod is going to be the blah blah blah stage 3.1428 kit that you are going to buy next fall.
i will note that you started with the insults
my argument was all about that kit not being worth the price you posted.
i am a vw/audi hater, they are comfortable, but thats about it.
my gf has owned them (so did my ex), and none of them have out lasted any of my hondas. they were nothing but a headache for me.
The kit is $4500 !!! Now I think that if you did try to build this kit, with the same quality, you would far exceed this amount IMHO. If you put a price on your time or billed somone for your time/research and development it would far exceed this price and probally not have the smooth running, problem free results that apr offers in my opinion.
I knew I felt the love :hay: we should do lunch more often, the holidays are slowing me down, we should gtg for lunch sometime, let me know…
I do think VWs are an entirely different animal, they are a pita to mod/tune, standalones are not as plug an play or easy to deal with as most of the Jap cars, and all the VW electrical is a freaking nightmare.
i think newman (and some other people) missed those posts with the price correction.
for 4500 its not horrible, mostly because of the turbo, and the ecu. (i believe i said that already) the intercooler seems a bit high, but that style of ic seems to always be more expensive.
and zwarbutt, i always agree to disagree. i just really really like to disagree. it makes the work day pass a little faster.
there doesnt seem to be a lot of interest from diy guys. the honda guys disassembled the stock code, figured it out, and rewrote it to make it better. there is nothing stopping the vw camp from doing the same thing, except for a lack of interest.
this is our busy season, but i can still sneak out for a power lunch, and buy that i mean go get half drunk.
he said 5500 with the intercooler. give me 5500 and i will pwn it.
I turboed my maxima for 4000 bucks.
But that also included FULL exhaust.
e-01 Boost controller (450 bucks)
Greddy warning gauges (200 each)
A bunch of autometer gauges
A turbo timer.
A clutch
Battery relocation
Optima sealed battery
And some used coilovers.
EDIT: please note, i did not use one “nissan specific” part
you are wrong. the I/O’s to the ECU are all the same. Cut off your ECU, wire in an EMS. The harness stock will be fine, and operates the same as the harness in my 240.
bah, i did mine for a lot less. but (not to switch sides) did you use a GT turbo, or an intercooler that flows up and down?
that will add about a grand to the price.
That IC looks like the Spearco 221 assembly core. It retails around $550 or so. Regardless, VW’s are ghey unless you have gobs and gobs of money to throw at them to get out of the 13’s…
BTW, just because a manifold is not equal length and cast, doesn’t mean it’s shit. Case in point, stock 2G DSM exhaust manifold has gone 11’s with just a mild port.
Thats great  to you and your DIY-ablities, and I dont doubt your capabilites.
Heres a thought, stay with me now…I had a GTI before and was looking to put a turbo kit on it, cause I had done all my ghey/stupid VW-ricer mods, stretched tires and all, but here were my thoughts… Kit price was approx 5000 give or take, if I purchased all the itmes I need on my own I would have come in at about 3800-4000 so I would save some money, but the only thing is that this was leaving the programing/EMS still unresolved… most of the aftermarket programming sux ass, and going with a standalone would put me over in cost (even though it would be better) my time and my daily driveablitiy would have suffered severly. So after weighing things out I bought my DSM a better platform all together. Hope you liked my story.
everything was new?
damn
thats not a bad price at all then.
disclaimer:
we are not bashing this because it was free
^
we will have to include this apparently this needs to be included with all our posts. its cool that its free, just that it could be improved upon.
matt, whats your manifold look like?
does the new e-manage ultimate have a vw harness? the new ultimate seems like the best bang for the buck as far as ems on a budget. and i have talked to a few guys that have wired them up on other cars, and rocket surgeons they were not.
granted this doesnt help the car you used to have, but could save a lot of people some serious cash.
I have a question? Since I have only put 1 standalone in a VW and it was a corrado, what about the 4 immobolizer functions that are used in vw/audis that disable the car, always seem to be the PITA part of a swap, and also the Drive by wire? assuming with the standalone a drive by cable swap would be needed then or preffered?
When i keep saying EMS, i mean AEM EMS. Which is a standalone. I got all my major components on ebay for very very cheap. Just look for late auctions or misspellings and shit. I think i paid 350 for my brand new t4/to4e because it was listed as a tubro or something. If i did a bare bones kit i think i could have done it for 2000 or 2500 all new shit. (sans management)
yes, you would need to eliminate the drive by wire.
The imobilizer functions could be eliminated, and shouldnt be a problem because they directly affect the motor? yes? Dont they kill spark and shit? Wouldn’t be a problem if the stock ECU was gone.
Yes they do, and if a gauge cluster does not match the ECU and all that happy horse shit the car wont run. All the more reason that Its a PITA to put in Stanalone, All that shit isnt needed IMHO, sooo glad I dont have to deal with that shit anymore
I skipped the last 2 pages of this but I can sum it up
“Your turbo ferrari is a piece of shit because it cost $400k, and is slower than my civic”
What a fucking clown.
You call yourself an enthusiast? More like someone with small pecker syndrome. Are you going to drive a hatch forever? No, once you leave the teen years, and get a real job, I wonder how long it is before we see you coming back to post about your new this or that, which is obviously by your own account, a waste of money, since your current $500 hatch was faster with $1000 in mods.
