that’s badass!! I love the fire extinguisher overflow, probably one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen in years
It’s alive! Awesome!
Keep cranking on it so you can do some distance driving.
The first mile usually has you white knucking it making sure nothing breaks or falls off
Sorry I couldn’t be there to see her off on the maiden voyage. You probably felt a million bucks driving that thing.
PS: Hood off = tough as hell. Absolutely love it.
Awesome car! It looks sort of funny with the hood off. Most people don’t know how low an LT1/LS1 motor is, until they see one installed into something else. They were designed to fit under 4th gen Camaro windshields. I bet you there is at least a foot of room between the top of the motor and the bottom of the hood.
What do you have left to do on the project, just loose ends now?
Yes, it’s funny how low the engine sits in there:)
What’s left? Need to figure out why the elec. fan turns on right away, and why the brand new alternator is moaning. Also, the wiring in this car mucst have been done by a third grader…here’s an example of what needs to be remedied, and the reason why there were no reverse lights:
Seriously, why is there a cut wire??? WTF…
Will eventually need some exhaust fabbed up since I’m running flex pipe for the moment between the headers and the cat back that was on the car. There’s a slight leak, but nothing major.
Once all the bugs are sorted out, the next steps will be new carpet, some dressing up of the interior, and possibly a color change. This would obviously be a winter activity, but the plan is for all of this to be done by about spring time so I can send the car back home and he can have the rest of the summer to enjoy it.
Hrmm…the fans will turn on immediately if you have the climate knob on defrost or a/c iirc. Maybe it has something to do with that. Otherwise they are told to turn on when the pcm sees 210 (not positive but it’s around ths temp) degrees at the front of the water pump. The coolant temp sender in the water pump goes to the pcm, the one in the cylinder head runs the guage in the dash. You can change the temp with which it will turn the fans on when/if you do a reflash of the computer.
Now this is a fucking awesome build, one of my personal favs that ive seen on here yet. Huge  man. keep up the good work
I haven’t reflashed the computer yet, so that may have somthing to do with it. I’m running a single Taurus SHO fan, as opposed to the dual fan that the 9C1 had. My friend who has been aiding with the wiring mentioned somethings about the relays causing it to turn on early??? We will get it figured out next time he stops out. I have an Autometer gauge I still have to hook up, I should do that tonight and see what the engine is running at.
Thanks for the lesson on how the fans work, may be helpful to know when we troubleshoot this.
Finally got some old pics hosted, so this may be a bit out of place.
Had to bend new lines for the tranny cooler. The Summit radiator has a built in tank with 5/16" fittings, while the 4L60E is 3/8". I ran the 3/8" from the trans, made a few bends, and then fit the 3/8" line over the 5/16" lines from the radiator. I took tranny hose over the top to stop any leak potential.
For the throttle cable I used the Caprice piece, cut it in half, and bolted to the end of it some hardware so that it could mate to the '55 pivot arm.
Power steering needed a mount. I took some angle aluminum, some bolts, and here’s the result.
More to come…stay tuned
For the shift linkage I was going to try to use the Caprice parts. However this was proving to be too much time and effort, and I wasn’t confident with where it was going. $50 later and this is what I went with, and am glad I did. Lokar direct linkage, nice piece with several adjustment points:
Installed, feels very soild
This was kindof fun, needed a way to conceal the Caprice fuse box. Found at Lowes this electrica box that measured 6"x6"x4" and had a nice removable lid.
Mounted with some well nuts, also note the hole I cut into it for the harness to pass through.
Painted, covered up, just have to run some loom over the wires.
Also, I found a grooved pulley for that bottom bracket I had posted earlier in the thread. A belt 1" shorter than stock was used to get a nice fit. The stock piece was too sloppy.
Love the Lokar rod and the semigloss black the box ended up. Really compliments the engine bay.
Super cool build!! genius ideas! Great work!
this is one of the coolest build threads i’ve seen on here, keep up the good work looks great !
Nice meeting ya. Nice double nickel.
You had the MufflerMan employees all drooling.
Car has been on the road and I’ve been putting as many miles on as possible:) Since my last visit, the following things were done:
*Added the 2" blocks to the rear to lower the back end. My dad put the front springs in, but when he put the rear blocks in the old wheels wouldn’t fit. With the wheels on the car now the fit is VERY tight, just enough clearance to get them on.
*alignment at Goodyear on Sheridan. Ralph took care of this, I know many other NYSpeeders have used him in the past.
*cleaned up more of the wiring. Previous owner(s) had all the headlights, taillight, dash lights, etc. MESSED UP. With the new column in nothing worked properly. Pretty much had to rewire everything…
*took the car to get a new exhaust fabbed up. Was between Mufflerman and Amton, ended up going to Amton as Mufflerman was 3X more expensive. Was pretty happy with the end result, will try to get some pics soon to show what he did. I used the Flowmasters from the Caprice, believe they are 50 series. Car sounds MUCH better, isn’t too loud, but when you get on it screams alright. Also, the car pulls pretty good on the top end…feels wierd going fast in a car like this:)
*Still been making adjustments as little things come up here and there. Before the exhaust was taken care of, I had to rebend some fuel lines to make clearance. Made some adjustments to the steering linkage to undo a light bind I was feeling.
All in all, the car drives great! I think my dad will be pretty stoked with the changes.
Here’s some pics before the lowering and the exhaust work:
Note the flex pipe, thankfully this is gone now…as is the odd bend in the cat back and those hillbilly tailpipes:)
I also upbolted the emblem on the hood…this isn’t permanent as the holes are now visible.
engine shot…
Before lowering…
After lowering…ahhh yes, the tucked wheel:) sorry for the cell quality pic:(
Much better lowered.
When you bringing it back out this way? I’m thinking of doing a little cruising this Sunday.
Only issue that has come up with the lowering is it likes to bottom out on big bumps. I think this has to do with worn shocks and leafs, add those to the list of things to replace. Oh how I’d love to upgrade the suspension on this car to something more modern…
The cruise would be a good time for sure. Let’s see if Tom can join too. Where were you thinking of heading to?
Awesome build. That motor looks so small in that engine bay.
Sunday might actually work pretty well for me - I’d probably be able to do this. Wings and beer cruise?
