I have to ask. If you have the ITB intakes actually in the scoop, then no air filter, huh? Other than that knock your self out. It definately has the early 80s german design characteristics, boxy as hell.
I’ll put a screen back in the opening for the scoop and the velocity stacks have screens. I’m not really concerned as it’s a throw away motor. Worst case I’ll use some of that foam crap we used on the carbs on the Healey if I’m really worried about it.
I’m going to mock up two versions, manifold with the ITB’s through spare hood #3 and manifold with ITB’s under hood with Hood #1. (Hood #2 is being worked on with all the ducting for radiator/intercooler setup on the new turbo stuff).
skip that scoop, thats about as ugly as they come, there are few things separating your car from an rx7 styling wise, no sense in ruining the few good ones
Ok, so tore into the engine tonight. Everything looks good, except the oil cooler is shot. So the engine was definitely milkshaked when I drained the fluids out. Suppose I’ll be doing rod bearings and rings and just make sure everything is in top notch condition. Pulled the balance shafts out, most likely deleting them. Head looks good, valves look fine. Oh, the big complaint for tonight. Some asshat put an impact (or so it appears) on the big “nut” on the front of the cam, you know, the one that isnt a nut that is just the housing for the cheesehead. sigh So if anyone has a spare NA cam for sale I’d appreciate it.
Always feels good to pull the only mitsubishi part off my car. Hate that damn company.
Such a stupid design.
Thankfully, after test fitting, the turbo piece appears to mount up without issues.
looks good. why delete the balance shaft, thought it helps it run smoother, less vibrations right?
That’s what they do. Not sure if you’ve seen Mike’s car or not, but, let’s just say that there is no set of balance shafts in the world that would make it smooth or quiet. It’s basically a full-blown race car.
18lbs off the front and a couple extra horsepower from ditching them is well worth it.
Plus, balance shafts really are designed for absolute comfort in cars, so that people dont complain. If you do any modding at all, your car is going to do more vibrating. When I removed the balance shaft out of my 2.4, there was no noticable difference. Alot of cars dont even come with them, its the more expensive, more confort cars that you see have balance shafts, compared to the entry level cars. I think alot of newer ones do come with them though.
But yes, its something i’d always ditch when doing engine work.

My new turbo engine will have them, my NA engine will not. They do help with some high frequency secondary harmonics issues inherent to 2L or larger I4’s. Mainly the two big ones that happen on the 944’s are the oil pickup in the sump snaps in half and the AC tensioner, also snaps in half. I dont have AC and I’m putting a new pickup in, so it shouldnt be an issue. If you have a hand on the engine you could feel the difference, but due to my car being stripped with spherical bushings and a former PCA GT1R suspension setup it already vibrates enough everywhere you wont notice.
Damn you have no idea how much respect u just gained from me for this thread and all the pics of the progress and stuff lol. Ive never seen someone know how to rip apart an entire car and put it back together like that let alone an older porsche like that, thats prob alot more difficult. BIG  in my book. I cant even imagine how bright youd have to be to do all that. Nice work hope everything works out for ya with this.
Apparently not very.
lol, stfu. It’s REALLY bad, I dont even bag 99% of the bolts that come off the car, they just get tossed in a can. I know where they go
…and I’m starting to recognize more than I’m happy to admit. Once you learn the quirks of the car, it’s not THAT bad. Especially with Mike doing the work I don’t want to do.
i always take stripped blocks to the self car wash its easy fast and clean when your done
looking good so far
Okayyyyy, time to clean the barn. It’s an absolute mess, I have a chair full of tools because I havent wanted to climb back to the tool box, etc. Stuff needs to be boxed/organized, etc. It gets this bad every couple months and I’ll spend a few days cleaning. It should be going out to get the underbody soda blasted in the next month? Maybe? Depends on cash and suzukiriderman’s schedule. Finished tearing down the engine, should be taking the block and pan to get hot tanked this week. Also, I hate to disappoint those who thought I was doing this to a stock NA engine, I’m prepping it to 944Spec rules, so it’ll be 10.5:1 CR.
POS waterpump, the only place I snapped a bolt on this whole engine (so pissed off)
Now you see it…
Now you dont!
Cylinder walls looked MINT. My father was outside and took a look and asked if they had resleeved them
Oh yeah, and where some fool used an impact on the cam, shattered the tip of it and the woodruf key.
Ouch, sounds like whoever last built that motor up didnt have the experience of doing it a dozen times as you have.
Got these babies in the mail today, have a lot of work to do in order to use them on my car though. Hoping to have the new intake done by next Sunday or so. Also have a set of Euro pistons coming in from Sweden, combined with a milled head, might get over 11:1 compression ratio.
<3 your skills
mike i signed up so i don’t forget.
