96V6Bird's Spec V Nitrous Build

haven’t been on here in a long time, but i figured i’d throw this up here. this is my first power-adder build, and my first experience with nitrous, so be patient with me :grouphug:

so, the time has come for me to prepare my car and nitrous use for the spring. the plan is to use this thread as a place for me to update the progress of what i’m doing, and mostly to ask questions as i go along. as of now, i’m as much of a novice as they come when it comes to nitrous. i plan on installing it all myself.

i bought SUN_SPEC-04’s (myspecv.com member, to all you NYSPEED nazis) NX kit, it came with:

Nitrous and Fuel solenoids (these are used)
10lb bottle (will be painting it, has some pretty chipped paint. i’m thinking flat black)
bottle brackets
all lines, fittings, wiring etc (wiring will be VERY confusing for me. there’s a clusterfuck of wires that came in the box and i need to sort them all out.
I have the jets for a 75 shot. (i think i may have lost one of them taking it all out of the box)

purge kit
fuel pressure safety switch
NX nitrous pressure gauge on bottle

Extras that have been added:
Electronic WOT switch
RPM window switch with selectable pills
electronic bottle opener (valve type)
3 switches (arming, bottle heater, bottle opener)
purge button
1 DIN switch panel

like i said, all the wiring will be challenging for me. i’ll most likely be installing it all bit by bit, so that i don’t get ahead of myself and get confused to shit. i want this to be a nice, slow, fun install, something to help this damn winter pass by a little quicker and help me look forward to spring/summer.

first off, sorting through the kit, i have a bunch of questions about things i’m looking at. please feel free to jump in if you can help me out.

uploading some pics now!

ok, picture time.

like i said, clusterfuck of wiring. it’ll be a job and a half just to get this stuff sorted and shortened to proper lengths. i hate excess wires, i’m kinda a neat freak when it comes to electrical.

from looking at the plug, this is the harness for the remote bottle opener (i THINK).

upclose:

tons and tons and tons of wire…fucking clusterfuck…

one of the jets. i think i may have lost the other one taking everything out of the box. if you can see up close, it has info cast in it: the “NX” logo, and the number 41. are jets interchangeable for nitrous and fuel? or do i need 2 different kinds of jets for nitrous and fuel? also, where can i buy smaller/replacement jets? do they need to be NX brand (not that i’m cheaping out, i’m just curious.) ?

and here’s the actual bottle, 10# unit. i wanna paint this fucker, it’s not pretty as it sits. does the label NEED to stay on the bottle for safety reasons/regulations? it will be mounted in the trunk.

top valve on the bottle. it has (obviously) the fitting for the line feeding the motor, and what looks like a small valve on the opposite side. is this the safety pressure relief valve?

go at it. thanks for all the help in advance.

1st If you paint the bottle you cant run it at the track… they are afraid of people sanding them to paint them and taking away the structure/strength of the bottle

2nd Save yourself the time and have J&J do a nice sneeky install, he did mine pm me if you need anymore help… i had it on my last 3 cars!!!

yea stay with nx jets brand has different part #'s/specs/etc

K&S should have what you need

really? i had no idea about the painting. i actually have a nice sneaky install idea of my own…and i have all winter to do it. time is not an issue for me

you may want to save up for a clutch also, and a BOTTLE HEATER IS A MUST the differnece of 900psi (full cold bottle) to 1100-1200psi (full hot bottle) is night and day!!! Some bolt ons and 75 shot you should see low 13’s!

Okay first pictures is a Hobbs (fuel pressure safety switch) it is wired inline with the main nitrous relay to shut off the nitrous if the fuel pressure drops below and predetermined pressure to protect the engine.

The MSD window switch is to allow the nitrous to not spray to early (under 2500 rpm) and to not allow over revving on the bottle when you clutch to shift on a manual trans car

Then little black box is an electronic WOT switch so you don’t need a mechanical microswitch. Used so nitrous is only injected at WOT (open loop)

Techincally you need the nitrous sticker on the cylinder. However there are some places that will fill a bottle without a label

Any other questions hit up J & J

most spec guys do pretty well with stock clutches, though i’ve been looking at JWT and fidanza. the kid i bought this kit from had everything but a bottle heater, that’s really all i need to get. as far as bolt ons, i have I/H/E/BSR/MMI/SS and a few other Spec5-specific things…thinking about some drag radials too…

thanks for the info, i knew what everything was except for the first one. where can i get said sticker, and where can i fill the bottle? and more info on this J & J? never heard of them.

J&J fills bottles…

Oh i didnt know he was banned lol pm firehawk853 or TurboLS1 for his phone #

Nitrous on Spec V’s are fun. Make sure to use teflon paste NOT teflon tape on the fittings. Get a wideband. It is a must have for any FI. When I first installed my kit i was going crazy lean. I took out the fuel jet to find that debris in the line had clogged it. If I didn’t have my wideband i wouldn’t have known then boom… Also our fuel line is a bitch to T off so have fun with that.

nice norb, you preparing for next summers rematch?

yeah, i have a line on a wideband already. i was told that i didn’t need one, that i could tune with jets…don’t know how much truth there is to that. i plan on running an AEM UEGO. you think i need an SAFC2?

also, for the fuel line, i just plan on replacing it with some high pressure 5/16" injection line, already picked some up.

like i said, i’m not gonna spray til next season…first plan of action is to clean all the shit out of all the fittings and lines. i definitely saw some teflon tape hanging out of the fittings, thats going bye bye.

one more quick question: when i started taking apart the fittings for the nozzle, i noticed what looked to be like threadlocker. do i need it?

i doubt i’ll be able to keep up with a boosted 240!

you can tune with jets you just need the wideband to see how to adjust them

lol I would say it would be a good race, the best Ill be running next season would be mid-high 13’s

shit son…i might have to invest in some slicks…

dr’s will be fine… you dont wanna spray in 1st

I can’t wait to start on Matt’s build. You two should run when you both get up and running in spring/summer.

Take your time and install it right. You don’t want to skip any step when playing with nitrous.

Norb on the bottle… Idk If I like that

Either way… this should be fun!!!

yep, i know. 2nd @ 3k.

Matt W with the 03 Spec? his car is already boosted. is that who you’re talking about?

come over and suck my bottle anyday!

It’s my buddy Matt. He’s got an N/A Cobalt. I think it’d be an interesting run if you’re down.

i’ll run him now for fun! but yeah, springtime/summer should work. i should have everything ironed out by then.

he building for spray too?
