98 Mitsubishi Galant problem

i have a 98 Galant and its making a weird clunking noise when you either hit the gas hard or brake torque from a stop. it will only clunk once, then you have to shift to reverse (automatic transmission) to get it to do it again. you can feel it in the floor and it doesn’t seem to be a motor mount because there aren’t any vibrations. the half shaft splines looked fine when i had the motor out of the car, it also drives nicely under normal driving. it almost seems like something on the motor is catching on the body/frame. any ideas?

does the exhaust look ok?

You basicly hit the 2 main areas that popped up in my head, motor mount and axles. To be sure, have someone outside watching the motor while you torque it in forward and reverse gears. Check all the mounts to be sure. Just b/c you don’t have a vibration, doesn’t mean a mount couldn’t be bad.

A vibration due to a motor mount is usually were the mount is worn enough to have the hard part of the mount actually touch a part of the chassis. There, the vibration of the motor will be transfered through the car.

ball joints?

im thinking motorr mounts, hjad similar trouble with a car once, after a while it graduated, but at 1st was just as you describ.

i’ll be checking the mounts again tonight… i’ll have to get 22 psi to check the ball joints.

turns out it was the front trans mount…tightened it 1/4 turn and the clunking stopped… weird!! thanks for the input guys.

no problem glad i could help.
