need help with brake diagnosis

just replaced the pads and rotors on my car. after quite a few issues having to do with my car ebing a all year driver, and some shipping woes, i finally got it done and rolling.

flushed and bled the system…pedal feel is great. not as firm as i would have thought with the new pads and flush, but it is not going to the floor or hinting at early fade so i think the bleed procedure was fine.

took the car for a slow test ride and i hear a clunk though. the clunk however only happens when the car has a change in inertia. read as: accelerte from a stop, it clunks. brake and it clunks. brake again and no clunk. accel again and the clunk is back. following?

so my question is this. what could it be? i swear i tq’d every single bolt well enough, and even if i didnt i doubt it would show up the first 10 ft of the test drive. so what else could it be as far as brakes? i cant think of anything…i am almost thinking one of the motor mounts or control arms is being audible enough after time…might be a coincidence that it is making the noise after brake install…

anyone bueller? bueller?

thanks

I bet you it’s not the brakes…

what a coincidence then.

update. took all four wheels off. fronts are solid. pads are seated. rears are seated. but there seems to be the slightest play in the caliper. so i could see the pressure of the caliper having anough momentum before contact with the rotor to cause the noise. but all bolts are tight. every one. so i am stumped. no leaks, and only the rears seem to be loose. stumped. this would be so much better if i werent on blacktop in the middle of southie boston in 95 degree heat. damn

oh um edit, the play is only in the rears. no play in the fronts at all. so i am leaning towards the rears

Is the play in the caliper between the caliper itself and the mounting plate, or somewhere else in the system? It just seems strange that there would be any play at all, unless you had to replace bolts/nuts or another smaller piece.

is the clunk coming from the rear?

I doubt it is a motor mount. Usually the motor mount will only show signs of wear during hard acceleration, or a nice downshift that spikes the revs.

A control arm could be the problem. Maybe when you jacked up the car and took weight off of one of the joints or something it finally popped out or gave way.

BTW - The only play there should be in the brakes is the caliper on the sliders of the mounting bracket. No other play should be near the brakes.

motor mounts showed signs of wear before. not that i ever quatrro launched the car :angel face:
besides, why would changing the brakes put any stress ont he motor mount that wasnt there before. ugh
control arm is a doubt cuz it should only clunk with vertical stress, ie going over bumps.
no jack the mounting bracket is not where the play is. the play is between the sliders that leverage the outside of the caliper to the inside where the piston is pounted. so maybe the force of the friction between the rotor and the pad is causing that to clunk.

i have to get home today so i am gonna drive on it. i will test the brakes often, and if it gets louder i will jack it up and see if there problem is becoming more apparent. wish me luck, i am out.
