ACL Surgery/Replacement?

Anyone been through this before? What do I have to expect?

Background:

had issues with my knees since I was a teenager; had my left knee scoped 18 months ago and a bunch of plica removed. Went back to the specialist yesterday to get the right one checked out, figuring it was the same thing… this knee he knows I need the plica reduced, but is 80+% sure that I have both a torn Meniscus and ACL. And I’ve been living with it for a WHILE. Gotta have a MRI at Northtowns Imaging sometime in the next 2 weeks then go back and see him on the 7th to find out the prognosis and how much surgery I need.

Just wondering if anyone has had it done, what caused yours, how bad the injury was, how bad the surgery/recovery might be, etc.

I got a buddy who goes under the knife April 16th.

Have fun, it’s a nightmare of a surgery, and you will likely be out of commission for a while.

Do your rehab, and be fully committed to it too, or else it will make everything even worse.

I may need to go under for artho on my shoulder. I’ve dislocated my shoulder 3 times this winter.

I have been putting off going to the doc about my knees for a long time now. Can anyone tell me what the symptoms for this shit are?

I have a severe popping noise in my left knee everytime it bends under pressure. It use to be painful, but not anymore. Maybe I just taught myself not to feel it I dont know (I have been living with it for about a year of bein real bad)

I find myself torn to going to the doc, fear of it being something bad and being out of work for awhile, and or not bein able to walk or something for a couple months

ACL is usually indicated by a instable/weak knee. It will buckle under pressure.

That’s what my knees are/were doing, and it was just the Plica buildup; easy scope treatment, was out for a week, and was back to work after a month (great surgeon who wrote me off for a month, was physically able to go back after a week).

If your knee is loose; mine pulls apart if moved the right way, then it’s going to be more; like my Right knee.

My surgeon is probably one of the best around. If you want his contact info, I can give it to ya.

edit:

my knee doesn’t buckle normally, but it has before; it twists open very easialy though.

please pm that to me, I may cave and go in.

i had my knee scoped. tore my meniscus. someone fell into my leg while i was goaltending. quite painless and the knee works great.

I was on crutches for at least a month or two and in physical therapy for 4-5 months.

PM Me Your surgeons info please.

My wife is going through this shit now, with a group of seemingly morons. Torn miniscous & partial tear in the PCL.

i tore my acl, meniscus back on aug 3rd. had surgery sept 11. i was in rehab till dec 14th. I was out of work that entire time. I had a donor part put in and my knee is pretty strong now. Had some problems when i initially went back to work but all is well now.

ACL replacement. Was not really walking for a week but then was ok to do stuff. If the surgeon is good you don’t have anything to worry about. Rehab lasts a few months but its not like you are out of action during that time. Just a week or maybe a bit more.

i walked around on a torn ACL and fucked meniscus for 3+ years from football in HS. I used to be able to dislocate my kneecap on command and relocate it with a loud popping noise. finally went in when it buckled when i was squatting with 315 on, that was scary. Week of no walking followed by another few of it being really “loose” and having to keep it compressed.

man they made me wear a full leg immobilizer for 4-5 months after my surgery…i got hosed. Then i did rehab for a 1 month and then returned to work. 6 months of no work and disability gave me $1k. Then a month later i break my clavicle.

Wow you just explained my knee exactly, but mine has been like this for about 3 yrs.

I had the surgery for my acl, mcl and pcl. i had it done when i was 18 and now and 26 I have major arthritis. I can’t imagine when I will be 36 time for a wheel chair I guess oh well.

A few good friends of mine tore their ACL in high school and they were out of commision for a while.

One of them whom is a very close friend, underwent surgery right away, but slacked on the physical therapy since it made him depressed (losing scholarships and what not). To this day he can’t move or jump like he used to, but pretty much pain free.

After I partially tore a tendon and ligament in my throwing arm when I was 15 and injuries to my arm, shoulder, and back from my car accident, I really really wish I would have gave physical therapy 110%. I can’t curl a 30lbs weight with my left arm when I used to curl 60+lbs :frowning:

I never torn ligaments in my knee, only my elbows.

MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THROUGH WITH EVERY PART OF PHYSICAL THERAPY!!!

I am an Athletic Trainer and worked for one of the best surgeons in the area for 2 years. I have seen hundreds of knee injuries. Symptoms of torn cartilage are: Pain along the sides, usually the inside side of the knee; pain with weight bearing; buckling or locking of the knee; pain with activity. Surgery is all arthroscopic and is usually done in less than a 1/2 hr. With rehab, recovery is about 1-3 weeks (depending on size of the tear).

ACL tear symptoms are: Complete instability of the knee, knee will give out attempting to “cut left or right” of make a jump stop. ACL tears are usually caused when you have your knee struck from the outside causing your knee to bend inward toward the other leg or trying to make a sudden “cut” to one direction or the other and the load is too much and the ACL pops. Surgery requires a graft to replace the ACL (usually from patellar tendon, hamstring tendon or a cadaver). Knee is usually immobilized for 3 weeks to a month along with 3-4 months of rehab depending on how the surgery was performed. After surgery a special brace will be needed for at least one year for any physical activities.

Anyother questions feel free to PM me.

Thats a catastrophic injury. 3 outta 4 ligaments of your knee were torn. Some people never get full function of their knee after that. I’ve only met one person with a similar injury and he couldn’t bend his knee all the way or straighten it fully.

But you almost came within a foot of a slam dunk that day

SHUT up fag
