So, I want to start doing some work on my car. I have a garage, but it’s effing COLD. I’m wondering about getting a space heater to make it tolerable in there. I found two comporable ones for ~100 bucks.
I know nothing about these. How far away do they have to be sitting from objects so I dont set the house or myself on fire? Is it cheaper to rent one(if possible)? Is this the right item to be looking at for me? Thanks in advance
not all that safe ,not very good heat output unless your in a closet .in all honesty get a propane powered salamander or suutin like that relativly clean and good heat output for around the same price
oh yeah ,my bad never clicked on em …those would be fine just remember they do give off fumes and try to keep it ventilated a little or go outside every so often
I know the kerosene ones stink pretty bad and tend to make the air really dry. At my last job we used two of them for heat all winter.
My eyes were always dried out and I smelled like kerosene fumes all the time.
You’ll want some kind of ventilation. Crack one of the garage doors or you’ll have a headache and your eyes will hurt. Oh and they’re really loud and have to be run often since most garages arent well insulated.
At my parents house, my dad usually starts the heater facing out with the garage doors opened and lets it run for a few minutes. With the doors closed and the fumes gone the garage heats up very quickly and stays warm with the heater off, its VERY well insulated.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys! I dont think I’m going to be spending the time and money on running plumbing and heating in the garage as its not used often for what Im doing in the cold weather. Most of the time I do stuff when it’s warm out. I think using one of those space heaters will work out for me.
I had a salamandor the first year I started doing some serious work on my car in the winter, While it was nice and heated my garage fast it took up a lot of space, was loud, got hot quick cooled down fast and then had to wait for it to kick back in to get warm again, got pretty aggrivating at times when I was under the car.
Last winter my dad got me a convection propane heater from one of the hardware stores around here… looks like this
Its smaller and was only like 50 bucks… I think its a 50,000BTU. My garage is pretty big, I warm up the garage at the highest it will go and it warms up within a few minutes, then I leave it as low as it will go and keeps the garage a nice comfortable temp for the remainder im ou thtere, and if im DOIN WERK i sometimes have to shut it off or leave the garage door open so I dont sweat my balls off… I only used 1 small tank of propane last winter and I was in the garage at least a few days a week with it.
Its realitivly safe, its convection, doesnt spew flames, low cost and low cost of operation, and its cheap. Doesnt take up a lot of space etc…
Honestly best thing Ive used in an average home garage enviroment, ask FN Skank (pete) he loves the fucking thing.
I have one of those 40k BTU propane salamanders. I think they over-rate them at 40k BTU honestly. They heat small garages well, and work really nice to de-ice something since you can blow the heat right on it (suspension components for example).
The downsides are that its noisy and it will suck down a 20lb BBQ propane tank in not much time at all.
Yeah they arent that efficient… I had a koresean one… worked great, heated space fast, but then would shit down and would have to wait for it to get cool enough for it to kick back on automaticly or id have to unplug it and plug it back in myself to get it to start up when I wanted…
The convection heater is awesome I thought it was going to suck when I saw it I was like wtf… but i was amazed at how fast it heated, how well it kept it heated and how efficient it was
