I know that the car might not have made the best move, but if you can see it from a mile away, there is really no excuse not to slow down and assess the situation.
I know that most riders usually instantly blame everyone else but themselves by causing accidents, but as a rider you should ask yourself are you doing everything you can to avoid one? If there is a cow in the middle of the road, should just crash into it simply because it is in your path and you have the right of way?
I would argue that your attitude when riding have more of an effect on safety than the displacement of your engine ever will.
Riding season is coming up fast; Ride smart and ride well.
Every riders worst nightmare, somebody taking a left in front of them.
ALL “accidents” can be prevented. However due to nature of the game we often put ourselves in situations where they are much more likely to happen due to our mistakes or mistakes of others.
However, the incident in the video sure can be avoided. If you see car edging forward in the middle of the intersection may be it is time to slow down and see what the hell is going on before you blow by it.
The riders appear to be squids to me.
1 Flying down a straight
2 no mirrors or they are using bar end mirror often squids think they only need a left one.
3 both did not have their gauntlets closed to their cheaper brand A* gloves
4 MOHAWK! you see a guy riding with a Mohawk avoid him.
5 lowered bike, those front forks are 2 or 3 inches.
6 they posted a video of their foolishness on the net for all to see.
How the gixxer could not avoid that car even at that speed amazes me!
He was going way too fast, but damn! The R1 is too much bike for it’s rider.
The speed they were going at, it couldn’t have been avoided. The R1 rider seemed to have done nothing but let it coast into the Mercedes.
If it were me, I see that Mercedes looking to cut across and start inching … I would’ve braked long before to avoid the whole damn situation. I don’t trust anyone. If worse comes to worse, I would’ve dumped it and not get slammed over the car like that.
I don’t think either rider was looking far enough forward, otherwise they would’ve made a precautionary brake check once they saw that white car in the middle of the intersection. We’ve all been there before, where you see a car “nosing” into the intersection, and at that point you need to go on the defensive. The sooner you see it the sooner you can react; eyes far forward always!
In the end they put themselves into a position where only a miraculous display of skill would save them, and that is a lot to ask from any rider, even one with a lot of experience (which I’m guessing these guys probably didn’t have).
I hope both of them walked away unhurt (probably not).
Even with more skill I think it would’ve been tough for the gixxer to make it around the car. At the 2:12 mark it looks like the gixxer had some extra space on the right side that he could’ve used, but they were on a left hand curve so he would’ve had to drift out toward the outside of the turn… which is ballsy at that speed because it would’ve been hard to get the bike back on line after you go around the merecedes, so he probably would’ve gone off the road into the trees anyway.
The R1 could’ve easily released the brakes and gone around the back of the car. He probably froze and target fixated on the car, and once he was on the brakes he was committed to braking until he stopped or until he hit the car.
I paused it just right i guess at 2:12 and the camera is pointed back at the car and you can see the second rider still sliding over the top of the car…Looks like he hit the ground feet first…ouch…I agree with everything else you said though.
