So my VW TDI seems to be on a cold streak, just got it back on Monday from the clutch repairs, and tonight when I was driving (almost WOT), something happened with the turbo. It sounds like there is a leak (assuming a vacuum leak?)
I have never had a car with a turbo, so this is new ground for me. The car is in limp mode, lots of black smoke, and it sounds like I am driving a car with a BOV, just loud in general.
Anyone have an idea at what these symptoms typically point to?
No CEL, hoping to get a scan tomorrow… The turbo does still spool, just sounds like there is a leak somewhere, have not been able to dig in without lighting
Yeah I sent him a PM a little while ago… It sounds just like a leak from somewhere, I have gone into slight limp mode before, possibly a small leak turned into something popping off… But thanks!
Well right now I wont drive it at WOT, it is in limp mode, much less power, but the turbo is still spooling… When it happened I had shifted around 3800 rpm, rev limiter at 4500.
Sounds like a boost leak to me, perhaps one of the pipes blew off. If it happened when it was colder out that would make sense as the air is much denser and over boosting or boost creep is a little more common.
Under the car right now, took the belly pan off and there was a clamp laying on it, looked up and there was a hose popped off, and some fluid on it, not a ton though, where does this fluid come from?
I’ve popped off IC pipe before and theres a slight coating of an oil like substance in it. The dealer said it’s normal, so I’m not sure I’d be too worried about it.
As long as it is a little bit it is ok. IIRC the PCV setup tends to dump some oil in the intake. However the rings are known for crapping out on those and dumping a tone of oil in there. My friend just dumped $6k to replace his engine in his golf.
