Android Tablets

bought the archos 70 for the fiancee for xmas… we shall see how it does… ill let you know if its worthwhile or not.

I opened up the Archos 70 last night to see what the build quality is like. The device itself feels pretty sturdy and well built. I didn’t turn it on yet, but i have an sd card waiting with android market on it so when she opens it on xmas we can get her set up with angry birds asap!

Will this be an update than B&N sends out? Any more info on this or a link…

In fact, the company plans to launch its own Android tablet app store in the first quarter of 2011, providing a consistent, compatible application experience that could get the jump on other Android tablet-makers’ plans (hello Samsung).

I would totally wait for the Samsung tablet to show up at CES in January.

I bought the nook color for my g/f manly as a e-reader with the bonus if being able to surf the web. I wasn’t looking for a tablet as she has no need for one but it will be nice if they set up more apps and do 2.2. Seems they want to keep the focus of it as a e-ready with a side of tablet.

Why do the uber-nerds always suggest waiting? Portable electronics get obsoleted every 6 months. Buy what works now. There is always something better on the horizon.

The horizon is VERY close in this case. (I know that makes no sense as a logical sentence and only further proves your point)

Android phones and tablets that are a MAJOR step up are going to be announced in 2 weeks! 2 weeks! It’s not like I’m telling people to wait until summer.

Announced in two weeks. When will you be able to have one in your hands? With a stable bug-free OS? April?

Because all the android tablets now use the Android software for phones. The new android tablet is coming out with the software actually built for tablets so its actually a real competitor to a iPad alternative IMO.

jerk.

Also, its a Motorola tablet, not Samsung. I mis spoke.

Also, its said to be available after the event and they have already had prototypes out in the public since the beginning of the year so its not a huge change.

I don’t know…but can’t you just wait 2 weeks to find out? The shit that’s out now is probably buggy as shit too. Those Archos tablets are JUNK.

Archos device aint too shabby for the price!

Archos tabs are giant mp3 players.

no… they are giant android phones. which have video playback and mp3 playing capabilities. it works for my fiancee and thats all i care about…

So has anyone here rooted a Nook Color yet? The more and more I read about it the more I want to pick one up. Seems simple to do as they have an automated root process now and most of the popular apps are working on it.

I just picked one up late tonight… gonna tackle the root tomorrow after work.

Let me know how it goes. I’m trying to hold of till I see what the BN update that’s supposed to be coming out later this month does. If it improves the keyboard, gives you pinch to zoom on the browser, and includes flash I might be able to live without root.

I’m posting from it right now… this thing is awesome!

How’d the root go?

Pretty straight forward. You’ll need a microSD card, and probably about an hour to get everything working. I followed my buddy’s blog, where he has a very detailed step-by-step walkthrough (LINK).

Overall, I still am in love with it. For the most part, I haven’t seen any issues. There are some apps that won’t scale properly. Off the top of my head- Live Texas Hold 'Em will work, depending on where you are on the table, Word Search Unlimited is too small to play, and Traffic Jam is borderline impossible.

Dolphin HD browser is even more baller on the tab, I use Pandora quite a bit, and with Advanced Task Killer being used maybe 5-10 times a day I have charged this thing twice in 5 days.
