Another mobile shake-up.

WebOS is no more.

Tis a shame. Seemed like it had such potential.

There will be iOS and Android. Then the great war for our souls can begin.

It definitely had potential. Developer hype was an issue. Without app developer support, your platform is fucked. From what I understand, writing apps for WebOS sucked.

The funny thing about this is in the past 6 months HP made all their employees switch to WebOS phones

And WindowsPhone… don’t count it out with Nokia on board - and with Google in bed with Motorola, I’m sure HTC, Samsung and LG will be looking for other dance partners, too.

I’m less sceptical of the Nokia / Microsoft partnership now, but it’s more likley that Microsoft will try to buy Nokia.

With WebOS out of the way some are talking about RIM being next…

Fastest product launch and product cancellation ever for their tablet. Right up there with the Microsoft Kin. Lol

RIMs tablet is cool with the secure mail access and everything between the phone and tablet but the company’s market share is crashing and they are way behind the innovation curve. Still nothing comes close to the iPad yet other than the HP tablet which they canceled.

LOL @ Windows Phone being a competitor

MS and Nokia have a very low market share in the US right now.

Honeycomb is a great platform. If they could get passed the choppiness in the animations and just build some more hype, it would play right along side the iPad.

True that - but would you be really happy if you were LG or HTC or Samsung knowing that your software supplier is now a direct competitor too?

Motorola was always a force to be reckoned with for the other big 3…shouldn’t change anything. They are already so deeply invested in Android, as well as making a ton of money off of it. If they pull out of Android, that’s actually good news for Google/Motorola. They would be simply handing over a BOATLOAD of market share. Android is number one in the world right now, any company that thinks it’s a good idea to ditch it is fucking retarded.

edit: fucking double posts are killin me

Hahaha ouch!

News of HP trying to spin-off its paper-thin-margin PC business and killing WebOS devices shocked the PC world yesterday. The reason for the Touchpad’s demise was more than performance, but The Next Web is reporting it was a problem, and WebOS engineers knew it.

WebOS engineers went as far as to port the OS to an iPad 2 and the results seemed to add insult to injury. WebOS ran nearly twice as fast on the iPad 2 compared to the TouchPad according to the report’s source. The constraints of the Touchpad’s hardware reportedly stopped the WebOS team fron innovating “beyond certain points” early on. The WebOS team even wanted the Touchpad and Pre smart phones gone before they were released.

The WebOS team deployed WebOS in Mobile Safari as a web-app, did the same on the Touchpad with its browser, and saw the same speed increase on the iPad over the Touchpad as they did porting WebOS over to the iPad natively.

yep, you know you fail at hardware when that happens.

They were running a dual-core processor on that too, and from what I understand, it clocks higher than the A5 chip…Just goes to show how different the architectures for chips can be. I don’t know the differences in the RAM at all.

In the mobile arena, being #1 will be good for about a device generation. And if Google decides to “tailor” the Android system to Motorola-branded products just like Apple is vertically integrated within the iOS/iPhone/iPad format, well that would leave the others out in the cold no matter what they want to do.

Ya. they said that the WebOS was built around snap dragon but the only thing that blows my mind is its their own damn OS. Its not like they built a device and failed. THEY BUILT THE DAMN OS AND COULDN’T PROPERLY BUILT HARDWARE TO SHOW IT OFF?!

Don’t they already do this? I thought that Motorola devices get priority for updates and stuff first?

HTC, Samsung and Moto definitely get first dibs at Android. However, Google’s Ace in the hole to inspire hardware innovation is the Nexus line. Every year they open up the Nexus bidding, and allow a Manufacturer to “wow” them. The Manufacturer that wins gets to be the Nexus creator. That Nexus phone then becomes Google’s development device. Android is generally tailored directly to that phone. Hence why nexus devices are always first to get the latest android builds. The Nexus Prime is due out in the fall, and word has it that Samsung swooped in and took it away again.

Google has gone on record to state that Moto will NOT be given any preference, the Nexus program will remain in tact.

WebOS was never a competitor, it never had it’s devices. The Palm devices were so god awful it was embarrassing. The HP touchpad tablet seemed decent but WebOS just isn’t appealing when you have iOS and Android.

I wonder how Bono feels.

I remember when my I thought I was the shit with my Treo
