Apple beat Samsung. Samsung ordered to pay $1.05B in damages.

Add Facebook to that list and you have defined pretty much 85% of Mac owners.

People drive cars every day but still couldn’t tell you how a car works… Just because you use one program on a computer all day doesn’t make you a computer person. It makes you a computer user. Yes, you can out wit the 80 year old that bought the monitor thinking it was a computer but over all, you are not any more of a computer person as someone who drives to work every morning is a mechanic.

A computer is a tool. People use them all different ways from communicating online and typing documents, to running an application to perform a task, to a general swiss army kife for multiple different uses and you should buy something that solves your purpose and makes your life easier.

Fry’s example of his wife is a good description of most Apple owners. Not 100% savvy, don’t really take care of electronics a,d using it for a simple purpose. People can buy one, keep it for years, and have all in one access to Apps and music in one place and not have to search the internet to find what to use.

LZ and I use our Mac about the same. Multiple environments in virtual machines for testing and staging, I have boot camp to run Windows 7 for my Windows requirements to connect and develop on my Xbox and the Mac environment for Xcode and web dev tools which the solid hard drive is great for. I personally can not do a lot of my work on a PC platform as you can’t on a Mac. Screw drivers come in different types and sizes, there isn’t one answer for every problem.

If apple doesn’t phase out software on it, (iTunes, Office, etc.)

Especially if it’s a Mac…Ever take one of those things apart. 3 or 4 different TORX screwdrivers, then a Phillips head. It’s a goddamn nightmare. I’ve been using my Mac a lot more because it’s lightweight and can do the simple tasks I need it to do, including network troubleshooting.

The argument with graphic designers is horseshit though. Adobe suites are available on both platforms, same commands, and hardware is almost always both Intel, so there is really no advantage anymore with a Mac. Music recording however I could see. ProTools software and hardware is really designed to be used on a Mac.

so apparently i should pay attention to the difference between computer person and computer user because its just like a car person is different then a car user right? yeah theres car people that enjoy cars but still dont know how they work. look at all the old farts that have other people work on their cars.

you dont have to be a fucking programmer or IT specialist to be a computer person.

sorry for my ignorance on the subject.

It is absolutely a sad day for Android… Samsung took the reigns on developing and more importantly MARKETING a line of devices that showed the lay-user “See, we can do all that shit apple does too.” If you dont think this is a step backward for Android you better look again. Joe Useroffthestreet finally had a few devices he could look at as “his sweet Android phone” and not just “a knock off iphone” which so many Android users believe they got stuck with. Other companies tried but nobody made waves like Samsung did promoting the trendy end of their Android devices, which ultimately, was a good step for Android. This will now just knock them down a peg till they find a way around it.

In terms of classifying users, there are many more catagories than user and “computer person”. If you have an interest in computers beyond the average person, then you probably fall into the category of “power user”.

Regardless of how you categorize yourself, you need to buy a computer with your usage in mind.

You are kind-of-right, except for the fact that professional graphic design and photography work really requires a High-End display. Macs come with great displays out of the box. Something that comoddity laptops lack. For desktops, high-end monitors can be purchased, but they are very expensive to the point that you don’t see much savings by going windows vs. mac.

Butchering Android to mimic iOS functionality is NOT what Google had in mind when they released Android. OEM skins and add-ons are a disservice to stock android.

“See we can do all that shit apple does too” is NOT how you innovate…

That’s not to say that I agree with Apple’s suits, but I certainly do think that Samsung could do better in differentiating themselves from what Apple is doing. I mean, so much of what they do is on the coat-tails of apple stuff. S-Voice is a great example.

Like Fry said, it’s tough to feel bad for an Asian company that got in trouble for ripping off the ideas of an American company.

I will give Apple the thumbsup on the displays, especially the retinas and Cinemas. even the 27" iMacs look great. Fortunately due to our education contract we can get some pretty nice high end HP stuff for a fraction of the price. Not everyone has that option so I guess a Mac display wouldn’t be bad. Software/hardware wise there really is no difference.

Are you talking about the Galaxy S III? Which had nothing to do with this lawsuit?

Its not that simple though. In order to stay competitive companies still need to respond to popular need. Im sure the umpteen hours of market research showed them users have grown accustomed/favored the “standard” apple has set with their OS/hardware. They made an effort to innovate off of that platform but sure, there are going to familiar features that people want. Personally im not going to see this any other way because im the biggest opponent of where patent laws are in this country and frankly, if you think that school of thought is wrong in this case, ask the the handful of other national courts who have ruled against apple in this matter.

No im talking about the entire Galaxy line. Yes the S III was their most obvious shot at apple but theyve been making efforts to draw comparisons since the Galaxy 4g, all the way to the Galaxy Tab.

This.

And they’ll lose because of FRAND, just like Moto did.

Patent law over standards (things like wifi, 3g, LTE etc) is much different than design and usability. This is a pretty clear case of Samsung making a PR move and I doubt it ever even sees a courtroom.

Just unboxed my Mac Mini server today…Good thing I have an apple consultant.

man, i had a response typed out then i had to run and get some work done. good point made about expected functionality. IMO, google is doing a better job at bridging the functionality though. Siri is a good example. Samsung ripped it off with s-voice. Google implemented it in a different way, with Voice Search. So you can still ask your phone questions with your voice, but it’s not really obvious that google was/is playing catch-up with the tech.

In general google keeps up with apple’s features (example: siri), and apple vice-versa (example: notifcation pull-down). It’s important to me though, that they be uniquely distinguishable in a better way than what samsung is doing.

Google Voice was first. It wasn’t as robust as Siri at the time. But isn’t that just healthy competition? Take an idea and expand on it?

Lol hence what this debate is all about.

But yes, google voice was first by at least a year and a half but it was Samsungs voice search that was in question. Either way it all stinks. As consumers who dump assloads of money into the phone market between devices and service plans, we deserve that healthy competition. I know that sounds entitled but none of these companies are suffering, theyre just two already diversified companies finding a new way to fight over this particular piece of the pie. The consumer is the loser.

i feel the same way about this.

do not know enough about computers or tech to add anything further to this discussion.

Apple doesn’t even need LTE b/c their consumers are just as stupid as Tmobile customers who think they’re getting 4G. They’re so snowballed and balls deep in marketing to even care about the service the device is connected to. “Pfft… It’s an iXXXX product, it’s obv the best.”

Ummm…

haha China that is pretty awesome

I actually hope the new iPhone isn’t LTE. Any 4G or 4G LTE phone I have tried the battery life seems to go so quick since it constantly searches for the better service. Maybe they fixed it but my iPhone4 has better battery life than any phone I have tried, Droid or not.
