I have a set of Memphis Audio 5.25 component speakers. They have a tweeter, a mid speaker and a rather large crossover. My question is do I have to use the crossover when hooking the speakers up?
I really dont want to mount that large crossover and Im not even installing an amplifier to run the speakers so what I want to do is simply swap out the stock front speakers and tweets with the Memphis ones. Can I do this without any ill effects?
It’s not a good idea… the crossover is there for a reason: so each component only gets the frequencies it can reproduce. You might blow one or both of the components if you run a full range signal to them.
Also, if you only run two of the three components, you’re going to have a large gap in the sound. Each component can only reproduce a certain frequency range, so you’ll be missing all the mids.
You can get way without the crossovers Peter. You’re replacing the tweets in the a-pillars and the mids in the door right? As it is there is a passive crossover from the stock system and the stock head unit wont come anywhere close to overpowering those.
Idealy with better speakers like those you’d want to amplify them to get the most out of them. With only the power from the head unit there wont be a huge difference over what you had in there before, but still, anything is better than the shitty paper cones that you’re replacing.
i would take the speakers back (if you just bought them) and get a normal set of componet speakers. like some mbquarts or some infinity’s etc… run your own wire from the cross overs up to the tweets.
you can more then likely hide the cross overs from a different setup under your deck.
but I would not advise using those speakers with out the crossover.
I didn’t realise S14s come with multiple component sets, but still I would not recommend using them for two reasons. First, the stock amplification sucks and there’s no point running expensive 3 ways components if you’re not upgrading the rest of the system. Secondly, it’s highly unlikely that they will cross over at the same frequency as an aftermarket 2 way components set, and absolutely no way they’ll match up with your three way, so you are still running the same risk (sort of).
In all liklihood they’ll be fine, but at best it’s a half assed way to do it.
ITs all do-able. Ive got a 4ch amp and all the wiring but Im just lazy. I’m not looking for any amazing sound quality just something better than stock since one of my speakers is cooked.
I really dont feel like running wires in the car as there are already WAY too many in there. I just wanted to be sure that I wont blow the tweeters installing them into the factory mounting points cause I have an aftermarket deck and dont know if the factory crossover is located in the factory deck or what.
