I’ve noticed that my car is making an odd noise. At first I thought it was just when it was cold, but it seems to be a bit more constant after a few days of listening intently.
When the car is in neutral, all is kosher. When I push in the clutch, I hear a sound. The best I can describe it is a constant scraping sound? A low hum perhaps? It occurs as soon as I tough the clutch pedal, almost instantly, which seems odd that at such a low amount of travel it would be doing much of anything.
The only thing that I could come up with was a TO bearing possibly going bad? Any other thoughts. I’ve never had one go bad before, I’ve even reinstalled them with 100k+ on previous cars when I’ve received the wrong part with a new clutch :banghead:
From what I’m hearing it is more common for a bad TO bearing noise to go away when the clutch is depressed and come back when idling in gear.
What kind of car? usually if you push in the clutch and get a metal to metal noise its a To bearing. though it could also be play in the input shaft of the tranny. but that is almost allways followed by some other nasty problems from the trans. with that said my cash is on the TO bearing.
2005 Legacy GT, car has around 65k on it right now, always been maintained properly but is stage 2 (for whatever that is worth). I don’t abuse it, and the miles are probably 80% highway miles.
Old car. No more warranty. I’m well past the age of where I find it enjoyable to drop AWD transmissions on my chest in the garage. I would really prefer this not be something that required the tranny to drop. Anyone with suggestions on how my foot is interfering with the radio will be handsomely rewarded.
I really wouldn’t be suprised if it was a TO bearing. I have no knowledge about that kind of stuff but I know my WRX had beat syncros which was a common problems with all manual subarus at that time.
I had a similar thing on a saturn, I would get a weird vibration/sound when I would touch the clutch pedal. I thought TO bearing. It eventually got much louder, and one day the diff pin went through the side of the housing. When I took it apart the clutch and TO were fine.
anytime ive ever heard of a TOB going bad, there is a chattering noise when the clutch is NOT depressed and when there is any pressure applied to the pedal the noise either goes away or gets much quieter right away
