basement mods/built in fish tank

finally decided to start finishing the basement. its been about a month that i have been working on it. from block walls to drywall…

soon enough will be a drop ceiling and carpet and tiling. just doin it on my days off when i feel like it. yesterday i got a fish tank from my dad for free and decided to build it into the walls.

55 gallon tank turned out pretty nice i would say.

Looks good. Might start our basement this winter.

that’s sweet. bet it’s a bitch to get that flush

I’m curious as to how you access it. Looks really good though.

probably from behind the wall. Do you really think someone would do all that work and not leave access to it?

there are some bright folks out in the real world

nice

I need a house…

yeah there a room behind the wall where the furnace and hot water tank is. i need lots of help on how to keep it clean though. i need the fishtank gawds to come forth like they have in other threads

zexaccord…

cool

Depends on how heavily stocked, but I vacuum the gravel and do 50% water changes about once a week. My tank is African cichlids, and is stocked on the heavy side to try to keep the aggression spread out. And extra filtration never hurts. I use bio-wheels, filter pads, filter floss, some carbon, and some ceramic media for extra bacteria growth. There are several choices like hang-on filters, canister filters, etc.

The tank has to be cycled to establish the bacteria before you stock it. There are bacteria that convert the ammonia (from the poo and rotting food) into nitrites. Another type of bacteria converts the nitrites into nitrates. Nitrates are used/removed by live plants or by water changes. I have plastic plants so it’s water changes to keep them under control. Never tried live plants but I’m sure water changes are necessary anyway. You can either cycle the tank with some cheap (and possibly expendable) fish, or you can cycle it with ammonia, which is what I did. Some sponge squeezings from an established tank will help get your bacteria started (I can get you some from my tank if you want). You’ll need some decent ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate test kits. If you’re interested in the ammonia cycling I can find a link to the method.

zexaccord can correct anything I’ve said!

Here is a good link about the nitrogen cycle. I’m going to the store today to get all the supplies for my 10 gal. That site has some good info.

Looks good Mac. Im trying to picture the basement, its not in the back park of the room is it? Where the “pool table” is…?
