Bicycle crew: Post your ride

Those looks nice. You have a line on some shoes?

Egg beaters for mountain bikes. Easier to clean and won’t get mud clumped in them. I’ve never had to clean off my shoe or pedal while stepping in and out of them on trails.

However, the ‘floating’ feeling takes some getting used to.

I already bought my shoes last year from the bike shop in ea. Don’t know what they are, but I never took the caps off the bottom of the shoes. I was also looking at the crank brothers mallet 1 set. Those seem to have more of a pedal to them than just the egg beaters. Thoughts on those?

Ran Mallets on my rig for 4 years of hard riding. They were due for a spindle bearing overhaul when I pulled them and swapped to some Candy’s that my buddy was not using (smaller platform with less heavy metal).

I’ve been very satisfied with Crank Bros. They were extremely intuitive and I found no learning curve to getting in and out of them. They are very natural to pop out of in emergency’s as well. The only time I get frustrated is if I pedal strike a rock it can disengage the cleat due to the release of tension. To me, this is a very minor issue as you should be avoiding pedal strikes as much as possible anyways.

That said, their track record shows that they do require servicing for the spindles more often than other pedal brands.

crank bros candies are like $25…

I was with him when Krant’s odometer clicked 13k miles last year…

I’m really loving this bike. I’m probably going to install a flat bar at some point, but for now I’m happy just commuting via bike rather than car.

-I don’t miss gears, even on the few hills that Milwaukee has (probably more grades than Buffalo)
-The steel frame is much smoother riding than my aluminum frame, and since Milwaukee roads are vastly worse than Buffalo’s, I am quite thankful for that

I will probably buy a dedicated road bike later this summer.

Cheers!

I see a few of you are avid mountain bikers. I currently have an excellent Cannondale road bike and I love it. However I’d like something for some off-roading and honestly I haven’t had a mountain bike since I was 16. I went to Dick’s yesterday and talked to the guy there and he recommended a Response hard tail made by Diamondback. Anyone else use this and is happy? Just want some opinions/advice before I dive in.

If you are riding road already on a decent quality bike, you will kick yourself in the face over and over again if you buy a $300 mountain bike. You will churn through components and the crappy performance of said components will frustrate you since you know how a proper bike should operate.

The ONLY reason I could see getting that type of bike is if you were someone who doesn’t ride, doesn’t know if they even enjoy riding, and likely won’t be going on more than gravel/dirt paths that would honestly be more suited towards a CX bike than a MTB.

Also, i wouldn’t buy a bike from Dick’s. There’s plenty of things that the store is great for. Buying a quality bike is not one of them, unless you are the exception I noted above.

Go to Eric’s Cycle Works in Hamburg. He won’t steer you wrong.

Fair enough… what would you recommend I pick up then? My road bike is a Cannondale CAAD8

What are you looking to get out of mountain biking? How often do you intend on riding and where do you intend on riding/what type of terrain will you be riding most typically? What is the most you would be comfortable spending on another arrow in your bike quiver?

These things are crucial to know before anyone can point you in a direction of what type of bike would be a good choice.

Since this is the bicycle thread… A friend of mine from VA/MD/DC showed up today with his dog Polo on his Trek 520. He left DC in January on an 86 Trek 420, and met us in Daytona for the Rolex 24. Since then he has done 10,000 miles around the US. His 420 gave up in Tacoma, WA and he ended up pooling money together for a brand new Trek 520 to finish his journey. He rolled into town last night, will be staying a few days, then off to the tip of Maine, then back to DC.

They can be followed here:

Hell yes!

^ “A man and his dog traveling for absolutely no reason at all.” Love it.

Here’s my Motobecane Fantom29 that I picked up off bikesdirect for $499 shipped. Retails for ~$1000, this bike has proven to be an awesome ride through the trails, and very fast too. Anyone looking to get a new bike I highly recommend the 29" tire. I’m 5’10" and on a 17.5" frame this bikes fits me perfectly. Some light assembly is required (no big deal here), I’ve got the brakes set how I want but they do squeak quite a bit. The derailer needs fine tuning but for out-of-the-box it performs great.

And with Paulo’s Felt Q720 at Spraquebrook:

Looking to go to places like Letchworth and Hunters Creek couple times a week and have some fun with it. Budget is around $700.

Hell yes, still going. They opened some new trails out by me that are barely used - loving it.

Decided to stop for a pic on my lunchtime ride.

I think I have a ton of air in my front brakes. Occasionally I have to pull the lever all the way to the grips for any real pressure.

Hydraulic disc? Bleed 'em!

after not having a bike for ~8 years i decided to go out and get one to go cruise around with some friends. picked up a '56 schwinn corvette. put a new chain and tubes on. bidding on a nicer front wheel on ebay for it, then gonna put some whitewall tires on. otherwise leaving the original patina on it. might find some truss rods for it, almost ate it the other day when i tried to see how fast it was and got a death wobble from the bad front wheel lol.

its fun though, going for a ride with the guys along the river tomorrow.
