I know i can download faster but dunno how to set up the port thing.
at the bottom of the bit torrent client there a little yellow (!) sign that says
“No Incoming Connections, unless this icon turns green it could indicate a problem with your network configuration”
sometimes this Icon turns red too, I’ve never seen it turn green but I’ve still got things downloaded.
I dont understand how to open the ports to allow it work better…
I can get to my router settings and such and I tried to do a port forward but its still a little confusing to me.
I have figured out that I am behind a NAT
what are you trying to download? a lot of p2p programs support torrent downloading now…like ares…if you have the torrent link use something else unless your using bittorrent to actually search also…but then again there are websites out there that can do the searching for you
U have to go to torrent sites like pirates bay and download the torrents from there.
Bittorrent is just the “download engine”, searching must be done on torrent hosting sites.
IRC is ancient and outdated…i remember the days where i was scripting IRC…along with a group of about 100 users are the reason MSN chat went “pay-to-use” then completely offline.
lol so you have two firewalls? two software ones at that? lol…
That was probably your first problem, two software firewalls are going to conflict with each other. turn off the xp one and keep norton up. I’m surprised windows didn’t realize they were both up and instruct you to turn one off.
IRC may be old and outdated but it is still solid. It’s also still under the public radar for piracy. Being a bit more confusing to use keeps the newbs away too.
I have stopped using bit torrents for the most part. Everyone I can think of has been under some kind of anti piracy pressure with law suits and stuff.
Norton’s sucks too from my own personal experiences over the years.
I use irc for a lot of things. torrents and p2p programs are ok, but don’t have 1/2 of the things that irc has. outdated or not, it’s still the best way(newsgroups are a close second).
Bit torrent was probably just mad because your firewall settings wouldn’t allow other people to download from you. That’s the way bit torrent works. It rewards you for sharing with others by allowing you to download faster. I use bit comet myself. I found it works more efficiently.
using utorrent and activate encryption, plus poke a hole through your firewall/router for the ports. Tweak XP SP2 using eventid to increase 10 to 50 connections, plus I use several registry hacks from speedguide.net
You might have to tweak connections on the torrent program due to router inability to handle the heavy traffic (I had one that crashed after a few minutes, so I got a linux router from linksys).
Note for torrent downloaders… make sure to know where your downloading from and always use Peerguardian with all up-to-date lists installed. A software firewall can’t hurt either. Heck, I even use these now and I’ve stopped downloading all together.
Believe me, I’ve gotten a note in the mail about something I downloaded… make sure to protect yourself.
