(1010 WINS) (MINEOLA) A Long Island judge is allowing the “black box” computer from one of the cars involved in a drag race that ended in a fatal accident to be used as evidence. The Nassau County District Attorney wants to use the “black box” in a Corvette. The device records the engine speed and timing of air bag deployment along with other information.
The Corvette was being driven by Kyle Soukup, who was 17 years old at the time of the accident on June Tenth, 2002 in Muttontown.
Police say Soukup and Blake Slade, who was 19 at the time, were racing when they slammed into another car. The people in the other car - 23-year-old Sophia Bretous and 31-year-old Jean Desir, both of Westbury - were killed in the crash.
Nassau County State Supreme Court Judge Alan Honorof ruled yesterday that the “black box” from the Corvette can be used in the murder trial of the two young men.
Each are charged with two counts of second degree murder, under the theory of depraved indifference to human life.
