Not 240 related, but wondering if anyone has ideas.
I was installing a deck into my '00 Echo the other day, and forgot to wrap the exposed wires of the harness with tape… two wires touched together and the interior dome light and stereo turned off. The car still starts, and the dash lights still come on. So, I replaced the 15a mini fuse marked “Accessories”, however still nothing comes on. Any idea what else could be wrong?
go to CT and buy a fuse tester, it has 2 prongs and each is used to touch the metal contacts, if the fuse is blown it wont light up. If it’s not, the light will light up.
Or do ti the old fasion way, just pull fuses and inspect until you find the blown one.
Ok so none of the mini fuses are blown. I just tried plugging the stereo in, and nothing (and the dome light still won’t come on). What else could it possibly be?
I checked the dome light bulb, and the filament is still intact, so I think it should be ok…
I just plugged in the factory stereo, and it doesn’t work either… Gonna have to call Toyota service tomorrow, hopefully they’ll give me some tips over the phone.
it happened to me before, theres sometimes a fuse thats called ‘interior electronics’ which manages some leads to both stereo and lights and such, check that, and yes, if the fuse is blown usually you can see the metal lead snapped, however, you never know it might look ok but actually burned within the plastic somewhere, good luck
i would double check your wiring job, u may not be getting power to the deck or may have snapped/melted a wire unintentionally.
pull out every single fuse and inspect it. if u aren’t sure how to, then buy the fuse tester as someone else mentioned, they are cheap.
and toyota will NOT accept resonsibility for this mess, so u are better off going to a small shop if u can’t figure it out cause they will rape you for straight time wiring labour (its a higher rate at most shops for electrical).
there may also be a relay for the interior accessories, also make sure there is no anti theft lock out on the oem deck and check the fuses on both decks.
I have not used my car since this happened, however just now I started it up. As soon as it turned on, the speedo went to 100 and back to 0. Then when I was backing out I felt an odd hesitation, and when I put it in drive and started moving, it got to about 40km/h and would not shift out of first gear.
So… what the hell did I do? The first thing I can think of is that the ECU is gone, but could it be a relay or something? Would a blown fuse cause that kind of chaos?
did you use the proper wiring harness for the deck, or did u cut the existing harness and hardwire everything directly to the aftermarket unit?
dude, its next to impossible to diagnose an electrical problem over the net, i would suggest reversing everything u did, put the car EXACTLY the way it was before u even started hacking wires and such.
frying the ecu could be a posibility if u spliced the wrong wires, or if some wires were accidentally snipped and made contact with another wire. the list of possibilities goes on forever…
once a customer came to me who recently installed a clifford alarm on his '02 civic. It wasn’t the installers error, the manufacturer said there was a different procedure to install that deck on 02 civics with vin # < 20 xxx (well, u get my drift?). his problem was similar to yours, car wouldn’t accel over 80km/hr.
your problem is obviously related to something u did, sorry but i don’t think the boards will be much help, you are better off double checking everything, it could be a very simple fix (wishful thinking is good)
Like I said in my original post, I used the aftermarket wiring harness for the deck, wired it properly, however I failed to wrap/cap the exposed wires where I joined the harness to the deck wiring. When I first plugged it in, everything was fine, deck was working etc, but then I accidentally touched two of the exposed wires from the harness together, and out went the lights.
