Well, My buddy just called me up. He has a S13 JDM Silvia with a S20DET, and was driving along, apparently not doing anything stupid or aggressive, and the car was driving/sounding great. When all of a sudden there was a loud bang, smoke and small chunks of rubber went flying behind the car, he then coasted 100m and then the engine dyed. It cranked over once and then never turned over again. I can’t wait to take a look at it, but it did this 500KM’s from our home town, so I have to wait a couple weeks to go take a look at it. He has no mechanical skills and only took a quick look under the hood and under the car. He said all looked fine except oil pouring out of the back of the engine. But he seemed to think there weren’t any other fluids leaking.
So…What do you guys think it could be? What do you think I should look for when I get a chance? I was thinking maybe a oil line or rear main seal or something might explain all the oil, and maybe it seized when all the oil drained out?
He doens’t want to puit money into fixing it as he was just going to sell it soon anyway, so be on the lookout for alot of parts and body panels going on sale very soon!!
ouch. :?
seization?
Some of this doesn’t add up. Where did the rubber come from? How much oil on the dipstick? Possibly an i/c pipe came off.
Well, I wish I had all the answers too!
I can only go on his story.
The rubber(If it even existed) wasn’t a tire apparently. So maybe a intercooler coupler, or a oil line??
Allmost all the oil leaked out. But he doesn’t know where it is coming from, just around the back of the block. maybe a seal or maybe a rod through the block??
And maybe it was a intercooler pipe that blew off, but that wouldn’t explain the oil leaking.
ALSO: If anyone is interested in any info on the car or it’s parts, just PM me.
samn thing had happend to me but i blew a hole threw my CA18DET, i threw a lifter and the piston went so i would check for maybe something external like a crack or something like that where the oil is leaking…just going by your story thats the exact same that happend to me so…
Yeah, even before your story that was going to be the first thing I would look for. Now it will deffinatly be the first thing to inspect.
Other than oil starvation, high KM’s, and high RPM’s, what would cause this to happen?
The engine in question had like 80,000KM’s. Stock ECU so redline at 7500RPM, and was full of newish synthetic oil. What would cause such a catastrophic engine failure?
Rubber drainage hose from the turbo?? just a thought. Only thing really rubber around there. Who knows.
