I’m not being a jacka$$, but how long will that tranny be able to handle that hp? With slicks won’t it just turn the diff into metal shavings?
Not sure, everyone is different. I drove my trans with 300 - 400 whp for a whole summer, without breaking it, or any of my stock axels. That trans had 114k miles on it, when I started. I beat the SHIT out of it, and it never broke. Derek broke his trans about a month ago, but he just put in a low mileage one. Its hell on the trans, but its stock, < 200 bucks for a new one, plentiful, and a 2 hour job to replace.
The SRT transmission is a little bit tougher, but you have to make a subframe to hold it, and its about 8 - 10 times the cost. You are better off just blasting through transmissions once a year or so, and spending the 200 to replace it.

im hoping to put down around that when I get my big valve head and a larger intercooler on high boost.
What clutchnet clutch did he go with 6puck? I run a clutchnet 6puck unsprung and a heavy pressure plate my clutch just grabs and doesnt slip at all:)

Yeah, its a custom clutchnet , audi pressure plate, their race 6 puck design, and then a much larger then stock flywheel. It holds alright! The only thing better would be going to a twin disk, this is the best clutch we found for the 1st gen neon. All the SRT guys have it easy, since their clutches are larger, and there are so many good ones out there. Clutchmasters, hell, even Spec clutches hold up in SRT’s. This is about all you can use for 400+ whp in 1st gen neon trans.

Sounds like it if the SRT ones are 8-10 times the cost of a “regular” Neon tranny. Plus, I’m sure that an SRT tranny could also pop with that kind of hp

Yup. Stock clutch, they just don’t break, they are tough as hell (srt trans that is), but as soon as you start putting a lot of power through them, and get a strong clutch in there, they break just like any other transmission with a lot of power. I am sure they would break less, but… just keep an extra 200 dollar transmission handy, and keep a day or 2 free, and we learn to live with it, hehe.
I want to say Matt with the blue SRT and the 50 trim just spent 2100 on a new SRT trans for his car!

Ouch. Yeah, I’d rather swap the stock one then burn through $2100. $2100 will buy 20.1 stock trannies, and then you get to have fun tearing the car apart

Nah not me, theres a couple black ones around in OP. One I tried to buy, a 93 just like mine but auto but the guy wants too much for it. Theres another 97/98 floating around OP too with gold emblems, if anyone knows where he lives let me know.

The guy that selling the auto with TT wants $26k + right?? It has pretty low milage though.
Those neon are pretty fast with 300whp to 400whp…let alone 500whp.
Hey guys, Mark referred me to this posting. I’m Dominick the guy that tuned the 501whp neon yesterday. We are hitting the track on Wednesday armed with the drag radials as well as the new mt slicks. Hopefully the transmission lives through the night :). Our current issue is dealing with spark blow out over 25psi. The stock ignition system was great until about 24.5 psi :). 501 hp was made at 25.2 psi.
Let us know how it goes dom! If you need a driver, i’ll fly down for the night, and pull a 10 second pass, then come back up here

The msd coils are an option and not to badly priced. What plug and gap do you run and what comp/ratio is the motor.
Is there anyway you could install a 555 trans from an older FWD mopar (spirit R/T) … im not sure how the bell is setup … i know those trans are bullittproof

8.1:1 pistons, and I believe the head is stock. Not sure what gap he is running, but probably stock SRT or slightly smaller. The MSD coil pack doesn’t really do much more for spark, over the stock coil, its often just a reliable replacement for the stocker. We may have to be creative here, and talk to Len, and see what he recommends dom.
For those of you that don’t know neons, Len = god.

hey guess what? its still a neon!
(busting your balls)
Should just convert to LS1 coilpacks. I’m sure the MS can handle that no problem, plus since they aren’t a real coil on plug, you can mount them elsewhere and run a plug wire. Or the GM 6 cylinder coils…
The 3800 coils are really badass.
What sucks is now mark, and dom are iching to build another neon. Neons are gay.
I’m done with FWD, I learned my lesson.
