Buying an out of state vehicle

Have you actually DONE IT? Because I have. And yes, I paid MI sales tax at the time of purchase for my Expedition. You will NOT buy a car at a DEALER in MI without paying the sales tax, regardless of what state you live in.

I found a GTO in Indiana and looked into it for that state as well. And guess what, you pay the sales tax in Indiana as well. It’s 6 something percent, and you can only claim a credit of 4% when you register in NY.

So unless you have some links to back up your statement, please don’t spread bad information.

I bought a car brand new from California. Make sure you pay the state tax in Texas or whatever state you buy the car in if you plan on driving the car in NYS while waiting for the title and registration in NYS.

I had my car impounded in Cheektowaga because I had a temporary California tag with insurance and proof of ownership.

NYS DMV sucks.
