buying cars out of state?

im more than certian many of you have done this at one time or another…but what all is involved in purchasing an out of state car? what are you required to do in order to register, etc.

are you required to pay both state taxes? any extra fees or anything i need to be aware of?

If you tell what state your buying the car from i can look up what paperwork you need from the state you bought from in order to register in NYS. wow that was wordy- in other words i have a list of what you need by state

wow there has been alot of threads on this lately… but some states require the seller to sign the title infront of a notari … Ohio and PA to name a few… othere then that you just pay tax on the car when you reg it here.

Now what about buying out of country… I was looking at a few TDI’s in canada…

Pauly, the car is in OH.

Nick, my bad…apparently my searching abilities suck

Meh. Its just been discussed alot lately.

I’m pretty sure OH has been covered as well.

Ohio requires Signiture from buyer AND seller , and Notorization.
I’m unsure over this part it also states:
Memorandom/non-negotiable title issued when original title is held by a lienholder.
OI assume thats on a vehicle with a lien on it.

ok. since my car came from Ohio and I’ve been through this already…

title needs to be signed and notarized with both parties present (guy I bought the car from “knew someone” and it was actually notarized before I signed it). NYS DMV wont even talk to you unless its notarized properly. Thats basically the only difference from NYS. I can’t remember for sure but I think the guy I bought from had to sign the registration over to me as well and I had to show that at the DMV too. But other than that, you still need a bill of sale (explain to the person selling that in NYS we have a thing called sales tax and its a common courtesy for the seller to write the buyer a receipt for tax purposes stating you bought the car for FAR less than you actually did). there might have been some extra fees to get the car titled in my name from out of state, but i cant remember exactly. but yeah, getting the title properly is the big thing.

Ya wished I could have convinced the Dealer I bought the evo from in Ohio to put a lesser amount on the recite :stuck_out_tongue: coming up with that much cash when I went to reg it sucked…

Anyhow what about out of country?

i brought my audi from ohio, you will need title signed [if there is cosigners on the title they all must sign it, notorized, and to be safe a bill of sale receipt even thought ohio title states how much u sell it for.

excellent, I appreciate the info guys!!

Instead of making another thread I will hijhack this one.

What would you do if the state you are buying the vehicle does not offer temporary tags unless you are a dealer. They give you 7 days and all you need is the dated bill of sale. Would this be safe to drive across other states though…

i was just about to say this has been posted a million times already… use the search button ya damn newbs!
