Hey everybody, just got home from chasenyadown’s house. We installed an AEM CAI
and loctited my butterfly screws. Thankfully all 8 of them were still on their respective plates, however chase informed me that they were very loose.
To those who have not loctited their screws, do them as soon as possible!
As for the intake, I love it! The engine sounds so much throatier, it has a deep growl at 2000 rpm and when the seconday intake valves open its awesome.
Thanks to Chase and Rage_rman for the install and what not. :drinkers:
Will post pics later
Glad you like the CAI, just wait until you add a header and exhaust to that bish and you will never want to stop accelerating at WOT (Kris I dunno how you don’t do this, Mr. 3000rpm). Anyhow Mike congrats on the mod, you know there’s no turning back now :E.
And yes all you Spec V’s out there loctite your butterfly valve screws, I could not believe how loose some of Mike’s screws were, I could have easily twisted some of them out with my finger. But hey another engine has been saved from catastrophe, here is the How-TO: http://forums.thevboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=64780
Mine actually had some sealant on them when I took them out, but I wasn’t going to take the chance that Nissan used crappy sealant so I did them anyway. Apparently now with the blue loctite I’ll have to take the blowtorch to them to remove them, which of course, I won’t!
Nick, how could you hate on me for cruising at 3K rpm? After all, since everyone refers to my car as a family mobile I figure I’m justified in driving it like a minivan.
The only thing I don’t like about it is now I find it doesn’t rev quickly enough - but a VQ swap should fix that nicely. Anyone else notice how fast their car accelerates in the cold weather? I feel like I have a lot more snap in it, even in 6th gear. I would recommend against driving on the stock Conti’s in cold weather - last night I was making the 90 degree ramp from Highway 16 south onto Anthony Henday and the fucking car was squirming underneath me when I went around the corner. I practically yelled DORIFTO as I did it… :E
Nice start man. My first mod was a CAI. Man if only I had the brains to stop there.
But yeah, as was said, get that ugly, octopus looking hunk of sorry excuse for a header deadly metal off your car ASAP. If I had to do it over again, the header would have been the first thing to go. Mostly for engine longevity reasons vs performance gains.
AND PYREXXX, stop driving on those crappy contis in the winter, you’ll kill yourself. The last time I saw a tire that shitty, it was on a BIG WHEEL.
I don’t drive the car when the roads have any snow on them whatsoever - but when it gets cold, of course you get a little condensation on the road and that makes it slipppy. It’s actually OK for driving on, as long as you take it easy.
And yeah, the Contis are ass - but I’ll be putting the car away soon enough so it really doesn’t matter. Thanks for your concern though, guys!
Yeah I plan on getting a header next. I’m looking at a nismo r-tune header, but don’t know what to expect to pay for it. Anybody have any experience with this?
Don’t bother - get yourself a DC Sports header - it costs less than the Nismo and you get a header/downpipe combo that you don’t get with the other shorty headers like SSAutocrap/Hotshot/Nismo, etc.
Ryan - I was planning on driving the 240, but since I haven’t managed to get it road legal yet, I’m mostly driving my Dad’s minivan. Not very cool, but lots of room in the back for…you know*… :E
*(Hauling drywall, taking the recycling to the depot, etc. :D)
Yeah Mike take our advise, we are now Spec V Whores and well, save some money, buy non-Nismo. here is what the Nismo stuff is going for (prices are in US, and this is a Group Buy) http://forums.thevboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=68555 so yeah a little pricey. If I were you I would go with the DC Sports header, you kill 2 birds with one stone, no more Cats at all, which is nice cause you will see some very large gains from this, sine it is a header/downpipe combo. and you won’t have to worry about compatability issues at all. Nismo is nice but for power mods go with the bigger numbers, not the bigger price tag.
Header- DC Sports
Camshafts- JWT cheaper and 2hp more (hey hp is hp :butthead:) and JWT makes Nismo’s
Exhaust -well I love the Nismo so I am gonna say Nismo, but Apex’i is really nice.
SS- Mossy Nissan.
Tie Bars- Tarmaq
Anyhow you’ll end up getting what you want so these are just suggestion’s, but they are what I would go with.
Mike, found this for you: You should get in touch with Lazarus, cause that is a damn good deal, and I dunno what kind of financial situation you are in, but I thought I read somewhere cash is better for you, anyhow if this is feasible for you right now, just go to a post office and get a US Money Order and send it to him. Anyhow I just thought that I would send this your way.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Now as for the header, I might be moving down to BC in a year or so, but maybe not. I was wondering if having not cats at all would let me pass the out of province inspection ( i doubt it). Also, won’t not having a cat make my car loud as hell? In regards to your link Nick, we’re talking about an exhaust right?
Yeah the seventh post down on that thread is what I was talking about. And yes if you go to the AEM website you can see what companies AEM ownz. DC Sports, Powerslots, and maybe a couple other, I can’t remember off the top of my head. But yeah this DC Header that Lazarus is selling is brand new so for $360us for a brand new header and downpipe is well an amazing deal.
Also if you are going to be moving to BC it’s not a huge deal for you if you need an out of province inspection, by that time you will know so much about your Spec that you will just take off your cat-less header (and downpipe if you get one) and put the stock ones back on for the inspection and then take 'em off again, Then for an exhaust go with Vibrant it looks just like the stock exhaust so then you would never have to worry about getting hasseled. Inspections are not a problem to pass.
There are just as many modded exhausts there as there are here.
All you really have to do, because when I lived there they don’t check your engine bay (although they do look under the car with a mirror to check for exhaust leaks), is weld a high flow cat into the catback section of the exhaust and make sure the car is up to proper operating temperature - the cat should clean the exhaust ENOUGH to pass the test, although your results won’t be great.
Alternatively, if you’re going to BC to go to school, you can keep the car registered as an Alberta car as long as you’re planning on moving back to Alberta after school, and then you don’t have to get the car aircared at all!
Oh ok sounds great. This will be my next mod. Also, Nick, after we installed my intake for some strange reason my subwoofer(factory) isn’t working. Any clues???
Side note Thanks to Ryan for making me a signature, didn’t even have to ask! Guess he got tired of looking at my boring posts
