I live in North Collins. From what I’ve read (They have a forum that barely gets used), they’ve been limited in Hamburg due to a new playground, the dog park, sporting events, etc. So they come out here now. For the previous 2 years I used to hear them now and then but they never bothered me at all, until this spring when they decided to use the field every damn day. I also read that they’ve had complaints in the past, and what neighbors they came from, so I now know who to talk to. I’m checking with the town on Tuesday as to what I can do. I don’t know what my other options are- I don’t really feel like walking way out to their pavilion (It’s posted land and they drive back there) to tell a whole bunch of guys that they need to cut down on their flying there to about 25% of their current level. Don’t think they’re gonna like me very much. I also noticed one plane they had flying yesterday was totally silent. WTF? I don’t know anything about the hobby, but why aren’t they all like that?
boom
i would be pissed if i were your neighbor, and im a car guy

define normal
Could’ve been electric.
They’re getting super popular now, and brushless motors w/ non retarded props are pretty damn quiet.
Or it could’ve just been a glider, I knew a lot of old timers that used to fly them out in hamburg, they’d set up a chair, crack a beer, have someone throw their plane in the air… then fly straight back towards the thruway and hit the thermals and spend 1-2 hours flying around until they get bored.
Most RC Planes are 2 stroke Nitro engines, pretty farkin noisy honestly.
4 stroke are a bit quieter and cleaner, but way more expensive.
As weird as it sounds, the bigger than plane usually the more tolerable it is. Once you start getting up to around 1.5-2cu/in engines you can switch over to gas which are much nicer to listen to. It’s not that whiney sound, more rumbly.
If they’re doing air racing or combat out there, then I definitely feel bad for you. Once they start using motors like a .40 Jett (Jett is a brand name) engine, those get loud as alllll fuck.
But if it’s really bothering you, talk to them.
I’ll ask my dad (right after I Post this) what’s up with the Hamburg field.
and I bet you 20 bucks, 4 out of 5 of them are going to have all grey hair, or no hair.
They’re nice dudes, they probably have no idea they’re bugging anyone.
Btw, I don’t know if it matters any, but if I recall the more high end racing motors like Jett and the like reach over 130dB.
Typically they’re around 115-120 though.
I remember when I was young and lived at home, my dad would LOVE to fire up his planes at the start of the season (or whenever he has to do some adjustments on one, or break in).
All the neighbors would come out and stare, shut their windows, etc… especially since it shoots smoke everywhere and smells pretty wild (I enjoy it!).
Never any complaints though. (In Lancaster)
I <3 living in the boonies. I’ve broken in cams on open header v8’s at 11pm without any complaints, it’s awesome out here.

I don’t know what they are really- I have to go out to the road to see them, but I did yesterday and they’re all different. One sounds like a cross between a really loud leaf blower and a howling dog, and looks like a fighter jet. That one’s the worst. Not that the rest are any less annoying. I’m sure they’re nice guys and I want to respect peoples hobbies, but it’s gone too far. I mean they used the field for the 2 previous years and never bothered me because it wasn’t frequent. I may go over there when there aren’t a ton of people and talk to someone.
this thread makes me lol. im out in the garage til 1-2am all the time working on cars, cutting, grinding, banging with hammers, etc and i never have an issue. my neighbor on one side is a gearhead, and the other neighbors are too far away to really hear anything. move out to somewhere more rural and you wont have problems.
The Douchery in that area must be high. My buddy lives right around there. He cant have a small bonfire in an actual caged fire pit on a weekend because his neighbor will call the cops on him. The same guy spys on my buddies next door neighbor and has had the cops to his place. Funny part is that my buddies neighbor (cool) took the asshole to court for Cutting down his tree so the neighbor could peak through. He won $100 from the guy but the guy sent a box through ups or something with $100 in pennies. lol
50 db? Fuckin me I sneeze louder than that. I’d do a little digging in the law books yourself. That doesn’t sound right.
Then make sure you are on the good side of the law, and print it out and give a copy to your neighbor. Tell him you will happily comply with the law but you have the right to work on a project at your own house and he can pound salt or move if he doesn’t like it.
Showing him that you are on the right side of the law is the only way you’ll shut this guy up.
lol @ “small bomb fire”. I’d be calling the cops if my neighbor was burning bombs too.
In my house, I try to keep the garage quiet after 10:00pm. I have two kids myself and they don’t wake up for any tool that I use. Including my guitars.
Just be thankful they aren’t flying .90 sized helis. Those will put all planes to shame in terms of sound and are far more annoying to a laymans ear. Helis will run WOT 100% of the time on a 2 stroke nitro engine. With an almost 2meter rotor disc and 2500 rpm rotor speeds, the engine is the least of your worries sound wise since the blade noises are so loud. My electric .90 size is probably louder than a nitro due to higher headspeed. At least they are so much more fun to watch than planks.
Yeah, I noticed that after… Thanks. Still to early and a long weekend.
The MOST mature way to pay. LOL
should have refiled the suit stating that he was not paid in full. $3 was missing
I’ve never had a problem in the city…
Funny part is the guy that won the $100 is a big collector with change and other objects. So the fact this guy just gave him a lot of pennies to go through and see if he can find some rare ones is actually a + to him. lol
Little update:
For a while there the neighbor even stopped staring at us over the fence … may have had something to do w/ me openly and loudly mocking him by constantly referring to the garage as “the unregistered repair shop” and the conversation i had with a buddy about “people we have beat the shit out of for perfectly good reasons”
Anyways, it took forever but the other day he came over @ 7:55 and asked us to stop making noise. No screaming, no veiled threats. No mention of calling the cops. Just pleasently asked us to stop making noise.
Then 2 days later the lady from 2 doors the other direction came over, half crying (that choking back tears sobbing bullshit that 5 year olds do when you yell at them) because Alex was using a DREMEL at 1:30 in the afternoon. A FUCKING DREMEL!
Fucking shit man …
This would make me bat shit crazy.
How did a woman from 2 doors down hear a Dremel at 1:30pm with the traffic on Delaware? Is she sitting there with a giant mic on a boom over your garage? That really is LAME.
What type of neighborhood do you live in?
You certainly have the right to work on your projects during the day and at the correct hours, etc. but just keep in mind that regardless of their reactions, you’ve disrupted your neighbors way of life. Maybe it’s just me, but if multiple neighbors were coming to my door complaining about noise (and sometimes crying) I would feel at least a little badly. Do you guys work with all the doors shut? If not, do you think it will get better for them come winter?
Or maybe they’re just upset that you’re putting a Taurus motor into a Camaro.
EDIT - re-read the OP. So you’ve tried to muffle the noise with the doors. That’s tough. You seem to be doing what you can, sucks that no one can really be happy in this.
I’d say the OP is doing everything correctly. If my neighbor came to me crying I would feel bad, but this is why we live in AMERICA. So you can have loud hobbies during the day at perfectly reasonable times.
My parents old house was on about 1 acre of land. My dad had a large amount of dirt dumped in the back to help level out an area. We had a 23hp diesel tractor but my dad wanted it done fast so he rented a Bob Cat. My uncle and my dad worked together during the day on a Saturday to try and get everything level in one weekend. Our one neighbor came over crying that her husband works swing shifts and told us to stop working so he could sleep. Keep in mind their house was 200-300 feet away. My dad said “hey I have this equipment here for the weekend and I’m going to use it.” She called the cops and they showed up and talked to my dad. They pretty much told him he was in the clear unless he was making excess noise after 10pm.
Some people just suck.
Side note I love the Shomaro.
