Just wondering if a lightened flywheel can be turned or if I need to buy a new one when replacing a clutch.
is there a minimum thickness stamped on it? Most flywheels will give you a minimum thickness…if thats not there I’d be looking for a new one rather than taking a chance…also depending on the manufacturer you may be able to replace just the mating surface of the flywheel.
The two step aluminum flywheels I do not like machining. The friction surface can be surfaced, but then you must surface the ridge that the pressure plate sits on to maintain proper depth and pressure plate clamp load on the disk… Problem is the aluminum material loads up the diamond grinding wheels, which are absurdly expensive. Just better to send back to manufacture and have them install a new friction disk surface and balance it there.
Lightweight steel flywheels, yeah go at it(IE pay someone to do it properly, like Hunts machine.)
