So today I got this crazy idea in my head and I wonder if its possible.
The idea is an awd GM G-Body (Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Regal, Grand Prix).
Since the front of the frame is basically the same as a 2wd S10 the front of a 4wd S10 frame could be grafted on, along with the differential and all the related parts. Would need to keep the torsion bar set up too.
Then use a Bravada or Astro transfer case on a 700r4.
What got me thinking is how Chrysler can make a rwd car like a 300 or Charger awd and keep it fairly low to the ground so why not another normally rwd car?
There is a lot of differance man , look at a 2wd s10 and a 4wd. Totally diff susp ,springs , frame etc . Could it be done ? Yeah but Prolly not worth it . Go get a a.w.d astro slam it and install a built small block .
I was thinking just cut the S10 4x4 frame and weld it to the G Body frame and keep the S10 suspension intact. The 2wd and 4wd frames are different but theyre similar enough to fit under the same body (S10). The rear halves are identical too.
Fuck vans. They weigh too much and have the aerodynamics of a brick.
that would be a pretty sweet project. It would be alot of work tho. The engine crossmember will fuck you hard and youll probably have to raise the floorpans up. Why not take a bravada chassis and mount a cutlass body on it…? it would be easier in the long run.
I had done a Chevy Monte Carlo with an AWD setup from a GMC Syclone and a v8 engine a few years back… My Malibu may get the AWD Syclone setup eventually if I pull it apart again with my new twin turbo banks setup I’m going to be building. But using a built GN turbo V6 was another option for me.
The chevy A body, and G body, share many front end components with the 2wd chevy S10 and therefore the front end mods were pretty straightforward. You will have to make floorpan modifications and transmission tunnel to fit the transmission and transfer case, also, the engine will have to sit higher and further back on the chassis, so you’ll need a cowl hood and other mods to the firewall.
And the problem with a full on body swap is that a G Body wont line up on an S-Series frame. Pretty close to a K5 frame but then its a lifted 4x4 at that point. Ive seen a few of those swaps but thats not the goal here.
Im kinda surprised the cross member would be an issue because theres tons of s10’s with v8 swaps. Theres even a 4x4 Blazer with a 305 on craigslist now.
no pics that i came across. Im just saying it still would be easier to body swap a gbody. So the body mounts dont line up big whoop. Overall width would be fairly close, the only problem spot would be the gbody frames have an upsweep over the rear wheels.
