Not that I can afford it so know that I am just dreaming here, but I was just thinking about all the money I blow on cars. fixing them, and making them faster. Throwing thousands away in lost resale value the more a car is modded as well as the money throw away in the cost of modding. Can it ever be justified to take the massive loss on buying a new “expensive” car that is already fast so it does not require any work to be absurdly fast?
All the time I look at what it would take to make my B5S4 fast and I know that at this point it is a outdated technology and is in reality not a very good platform to mod past 400ish whp because of the money involved to go beyond that. Same with my W12. knowing that it’s not a car that can reasonably be modded bugs me a bit, but I have always tossed the idea of :tspry: to get it into the 11’s. It all comes back to breaking it, and I don’t want to take that risk on that particular car because it would be massively expensive to repair engine internals if I found the limit. I look at my track car and it is just a toy so I don’t care about money lost there… then there is my fucking camaro. Well over 25K and it just sits in my garage covered in soot from the fire, with a complete lack of ambition to work on it.
My question is this. There are some really amazing cars out there that are faster than any of my cars could reasonably be right out of the box. The one I am in love with at the moment is the audi RS7. Round about 100K would it really be that bad of a buy for someone like me that is finding less and less time to screw around with car, and one way or another will still spend way too much money on modding whatever I already have. Say I sold EVERYTHING (other than my work van of course) and consolidated to one car. Put 30K down and just enjoy having nearly 600hp with a warranty. At what point does it make financial sense to buy a fast car.
your still going to mod it and void the warranty…
I find no mater how much i say i will leave well enough alone. i wont. look i put headers on my 100hp xterra, i often think it dosnt matter how fast it is out of the box its often fun to see how far you can take it.
and some of the funniest cars ive ever owned where pyles of junk. that i could tinker with.
how often are you going to even use that 600hp. your not going to roll up and surprise someone.
With the Camaro it seems you could have done it a lot cheaper. But some times the cheap way or easy way isn’t the way people want to do things. Just do what makes you happy.
i myself feel like I never want to buy something nice that sees salt/winter because it won’t last.
Audi tends not to fall apart like other manufacturers in the winter but i do get where you are coming from. I tried to use high quality components because the idea was not to have to chase problems caused by being cheap. Back in 07 when 600 ish whp was a lot i had a hell of a lot more interest in finishing it. 600hp is almost production car power now.
None of the cars you listed work as a daily driver or a 4 door. The rs cars seem to have decent resale compared to amg. Not saying i dont love amg, but their resale seems to be horrible.
You cant justify either argument. Unless you’re wealthy, you cant justify putting a ton of money into a cheap car to make it fast and you cant justify spending a ton of money on a fast car.
This isn’t criticism because I do it. I just know that I’m figuratively throwing my money in the garbage like an idiot.
