Sometimes when I try to shift into Reverse Gear, It doesn’t seem to find itself. I have keep trying to go through the gears and then finally be able to easily engage it into Reverse…
any feedback would be good on what or how to remedy this.

i have noticed on mine if you try to put it into R it wont go until you go back and forth in N a couple times then put it into R and usually it will go. i just thought maybe it was something to stop you from putting it into R due to no syncral mess(sp??). kinda like how it’s hard to put it into 1st when your still moving. it’s possible, but it’s kinda hard till you slow down to a certain speed(5 kph??) then it will just glide into gear with ease.
does it grind when you try to put it into R? if it does your clutch might not be disengaging all the way.
welcome to 5 spd boys!!
i believe all manual transmissions are like this. my mazda 3, mazda 5 and my 240 also does this. when u try to reverse, it gets stuck half way, and it doesn’t engage properly. what you do to easily solve this on the spot, is to either rev the engine a little bit, then try to put it into reverse. other way , is to put it into another gear, i use 2nd, then to reverse. and it should go right in.
Mine grinds in unless I’m at a complete stop.
Didn’t do that in the Saab pal!
Or did it… hrmm?
Funny how we can learn a thing or two
from fellow 240 owners, or in this case share
the same issues with the Tranny
lift off the clutch 3/4 inch, then go back down on the clutch all the way and it will work fine…99% of 240s need that.
When mine does that I put it in neutral, release clutch, give a little rev, clutch than reverse and its fine.
i’m not sure what year they brought syncral mess(sp?) into play, but i know my 89 doesn’t have it. what year did they start puttin it onto cars, do 240’s have it? anyone know
best way to put it into reverse without grinding is come to a complete stop put it in 2nd and then reverse gear, this is from my experience and it works
Whats syncral mess (sp?). All i get from that is syncros? All 240’s have synchros. And i beleive ob2 240’s u have to engage the clutch to start the car?
As for the revearse gear thing, its completely normal ever single car has it. My gf’s 07 jeep wrangler has it, her 99 jeep tj had it and used to sometimes grind. There wouldnt be a synchro in revearse like theres no synchro in 1st. You dont need a synchro to put it into gear at a complete stop. Synchros are there to aid people in downshifting who dont know how to use throttle to match gears, or when upshifting they put it in too early/late it will still go into gear.
If ur ever in 2nd and want to go to 1st when ur driving(i dont know why u would want to u can start the car in 2nd) just give the throttle a blip to the revs match.
Speaking of all these synchros and everything and u seam to be a newb ill tell u something cool. I never used a clutch when i drove my 240. Going from 1st through all the gears and back down i always rev matched and didnt use a clutch to switch gears. U only need to start in 1st using the clutch. thats when u get good!
syncros sure, i don’t know, some old guy was trying to tell me about it, it really didn’t make much sence, but from what i put together, you can’t put it into R untill u stop, something to do with the way the gears turn.
to go with your cool fact, indeed it is, i watched my uncle do that when he looked over my car(he restores old cars) we went for a drive, i didn’t know how he did it. you just keep your rpm’s the same and put it into gear? i.e 2nd - 3rd.
Reverse doesn’t have a syncro because you can’t synchronize a gear thats turning the opposite way.
ya man, honestly from all the feedback it’s helped me
with revving it a bit and then being able to pop it into Reverse.
It helped me to better understand and remedy that situation,
and be able to know others share the same thing.
thankz a lot to the fellow 240 members!
my experience has been 4th, then R
in my 92 i have trouble sometimes putting it. not that it goes in half way, to me it seams that my gears are not lining up. Reving does not work for me. ill make my car move a cm and it will pop in.
i have to go forward a bit then hit the clutch then it goes right in, or swing it back and forth in N then into R and it works mint. i think its just one of those safty things to keep you from going 3d then 4th then 5th and then into R by acident
for ppl like me… for some reason once in a while ill be cruising and thinking i have a 6… lol yeye i know
both the methods luis and varun listed work fine.
I think he was talking a bout syncromesh from gm its an additive that makes the tranny syncros engage smoother.
