cant pass e test

have a 93 240 redtop under the hood. cant pass an e test hydrocarbons are to high car runs good changed o2 but only brought the carbons down a bit . any suggestions before i replace anything else. stock everything under the hood even exhaust

catylic converter … if u still got the stock one

yeah its the stock one .you figure it could be plugged

make sure when doing an etest that the car has been running for a while to make sure the cat is a proper temp to work!

made sure it was good and hot when i got it tested it has failed twice

What are you having the car tested as ? A normal 240sx with KA24 or have you told them its has an SR20 now and must be tested under hot rod status ?

If you are trying to make it pass under the KA standards then good luck!

my sr passed passed under ka standars with flying colors. my 89 prelude winter beater just failed last week. i had to do the 450 cap thing. it cost in total 290 though casue the next thing they would have done was relpalce the cat and that would of put me over the 450 cap.

oh and my o2 sensor wiring was all screwed up on my prelude and by fixing that it made a huge difference

dude, it has to be tested as a hot rod. It is illegal to test it as a regular ka! It is the drive clean technican’s fault for not verifing the engine size. But yeah, its somthing like a $50 000 fine for entering false information on a car. Btw the limit on a hot rod for the HC is 2000 so i almost guarantee it will not fail.

my engine has been in for a while it passed no problem as a ka in the past but this time the guy who did the e test knew what it was and i had to go hot rod

If I remember correctly a friend advised me to buy a bottle of ethanol from Crappy Tire - and add some to the gastank. Add it before the good run you give your car before taking it in to be tested - worked for me

you can go out and buy the guaranteed to pass stuff or retard your timing right b4 you go get it tested.but it is possible its ur cat cuz i had 2 do the e-test 5 times until i passed and it ended up bing a faulty cat

thanks for the help probably the cat since i have had the little stock exhaust on since i got the motor installed a few years back.(should have already dealt with my exhaust)

it could be so many things. midas did a diagnostics on my 89 lude and found it was o2 sensor wiring. before they fixed that all the tests were way way out of pass limit. when that was fixed they all came in except for one. they said that one would come in with changing the cat but that would of put me over the 450 repair cap so got a conditional pass.

all you back yard mechanics, yeh just throw a cat at it, get some fancy fluids that dont work. do some research, covered many times before.

alot of failures are from faulty cats and considering its a nissan there cats fall apart alot and as long as the normal stuff has been coverd like ignition, and o2 sensors are swithing correctly

where is it showing that you failed? what categories?

Did they not tell you what needs to be fixed? Also, keep in mind there’s a certain cap, I forget what it’s at but after something like $400-500 you don’t have to pay anymore and you’ll get the etest certification.

wow

if all they are telling you is the HC is too high then that leaves a huge array of things that could be wrong:

High HC during driving Test or High Idle test:

Vacuum Leaks
Ignition System Malfunction
Faulty Computerized engine management system and/ or oxygen sensor
Faulty air injection system
Internal engine problem
Failed catalytic converter

High HC at idle:

Ignition system malfunction
Incorrect air/ fuel mixture
Vacuum Leaks
Incorrect ignition timing and/or idle speed
EGR valve partially stuck open
Faulty fuel injector operation
Internal engine problem
Inoperative/missing catalytic converter
Air injection system failure

High HC, CO, NOx on driving Test:
Inoperative/ missing catalytic converter

I’ve failed a few test and the guy at the place gave me this info so i knew where to look i hope it helps.
